I have recently finished reading Jeffery Eugenides' Pulitzer Prize winning novel, Middlesex.
I really enjoyed it, and highly recommend it to all readers, and especially those interested in transgender issues.
It is the story of Cal, a young "girl" who discovers as a teenager that she is a hermaphrodite. But it is much more than that. Cal narrates the story of her family back to her grandparents' youth in Turkey after World War One.
More than anything, it is an exploration of the endless dichotomies in our society, Male/female, black/white, city/suburb, immigrant/native born, and much more.
As I said, highly recommended.
