Whats the prefered version of word to submit files in so that they can be opened properly?

The scripts came online in early 2001. The programmer worked with 97, I believe, though there's no reason why it shouldn't take 2000.

If you've got the bells and whistles working, like auto-indent, auto-line spacing, smart quotes, etc, you should turn them off. They don't translate into the scripts.

I write in word...then save in .txt . That way I can use spell check, and grammer check. When you save a window will open up that tells you some things may change by saving it that way, I insist, then when I click on the story later, left click opens it in notebook (how it will read and somewhat look online) If I am going to add or continue I right click and open with word. This has worked for me pretty well. There is probably a simpler way than I do it...but I know how this one works. Just before I submit the story I will proofread it twice in the notebook format. I even sometimes print it out too.

.txt is the most accepted file on the net. (I think)

I write in WORD and save as Rich Text Format (RTF). That way, the overhead of WORD is stripped away, but special formatting, such as italics, special characters, like em-dashes, etc. are all preserved.

When I first came to Lit, I submitted my first story using WORD2000; the conversion during for final posting missed non-breaking hyphens and substituted the "%" instead. I resubmitted the story because it looked like shit. So, submittals using WORD2000 may, in fact, have quirky substitutions like that.

Hmm

Generally I type mine out in Word so I can grammar and spell check, then just copy-paste into the sub box.

Is it just me or do sub box stories go up quicker?

I use Wordperfect Windows. Speelchuck & Grimmer chuck, then save as ANCII text. Do a final visual to catch missplaced line breaks while in the submit form.

Still miss a lot of typos and homonims.

Hi

I write in notepad it's easier to see how breaks and paragraphs will look on screen in txt. format as it progresses, notepad is also easier on the eye for me being small.
I still have a few throw backs to my childhood Dyslexia and I can lose concentration occasionally making full screen text documents confusing to focus on sometimes.

I then paste it into Word 2000, spell and Grammar check it, then paste it onto the forum submit form and hope for the best.

I've only posted one story here so far, (and two pending) that came out OK'ish, all other forums I've posted on it seems to work OK as well.

Ahhh! A geeky thread!

I post in Word 2000, and ask to preserve italics. I noticed that when I pulled the doc back to check it while it was still pending, it was plain text, but my italics had been replaced with those vB Code i and /i tags, like when you're posting to a forum . I think it may be possible to actually post plain text and put those tags in, and it would work.

I need italics in my stories.

Hey, Manx,

How did it work as an RTF file? Did the story appear in Literotica okay? Italics okay?

I used word 2002 and it came out with a bunch of odd characters in the text after I submitted it, ended up having to resubmit it again by copying and pasting the text into the form then submitting it, so I thought I'd find out if it was my version of word Im using, or something else.

_______

Yeah, Doc, all the latest versions of my stories and were resubmitted in RTF format.

No problems with any of the formatting after submissions any longer.

Edited to add:
I do not use the "text box" when I submit a story; I let Laurel make the minor edits to remove my story title from the header, then she runs the script to transfer the RTF file for posting and online viewing.

For those that use the "text box", yes, you will have to add the vB codes to delineate italics (or bold, or underlined, etc.) formatting. I'm generally in no hurry to get a story posted, and Laurel, even with all the work she has to do to manage this site, still gets my stories out there in 3 to 5 days.

Hi pops :)
Just a thought... You could try changing the font and/or changing the colour over several paragraphs. It's an easy enough thing if using Wordpad (not sure notebook has the facility) but the colour change may well help the concentration click back into place. Then when you've finished your writing, re-colour everything black again and Bob's your uncle :) Sometimes just changing the kind of font is enough to help.
...was just a thought. :)

Your problem is "special characters" that don't translate to plain text or HTML -- "smart quotes," Long dashes, soft hyphens, single character ellipsis, etc.

You need to turn off "autocorrection while you type" to avoid the conversion problems.

In additon to Alex's how to on inserting italics and bold face in your stories, you may find my how to essay on previewing your story before submission helpful: http://www.literotica.com/stories/showstory.php?id=57781
