Michigan Roll Call

I'm headed to Minnesota, as usual, since my oldest married and hosts it. My parents are flying in that week for my birthday!!

Brother in law has dinner every year so we will be heading over there. Then it may be a short trip up north again for a day

That sounds like a lot of fun. Sagittarius, huh?

Is he the "cool uncle"? Or do you have to drag the boys over there, lol.

Although we both have large families usually we celebrate holidays with just the four of us. Wen we first got together we fought the idea of consumerism and swore we wouldn't turn into "that family" who competes with the Jones'. Instead we vacationed and did something new to create new memories, nothing in the traditional sense.
Now that my kids are getting older I would like the option to spend more time with extended family. So maybe for Christmas we will venture out of our comfort zone and go to relatives.

The wife's family rotates Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Easter among the four of them, so this year we're going over to the Kalamazoo area for Thanksgiving and it's our turn to host Christmas.

One family moved to Florida, and some of the older nieces and nephews are out of state (and stopped coming a few years back, anyway) so the crowd will be smaller this year. I never much cared for turkey, myself, but the rest of the food is usually good and it's nice to see folks at least a few times a year.

That's a fun way to do it! I never thought of rotating holidays. My bestie kills herself every Christmas running around to four different locations to satisfy everyone. That sounds absurd to me. How can you really enjoy that "quality time" if you're thinking about the clock the whole day?!

He's the cool uncle. The whole day is just a big get together. His friends are in and out the whole day and we've known them all forever also.

When everyone was close and/or alive we would split the time a little. My mom's was Christmas eve night. My dad was early afternoon then to her mom's for the rest of the evening.

Now it's to her mom's mid to late morning for the day. Big breakfast for us after gifts.

Ever since the boys were little, we've always split it up: Christmas Eve is with the extended family, but Christmas Day is always just us and the boys (and their SOs if they have one and she can get away for it).

Many years ago my wife started a tradition: We always hang stockings, and in each boy's stocking she would put a little Lego set, picked and wrapped at random. On Christmas morning that was always the first thing they did--dig out the Lego, build it, and then stage mock battles or whatever with each other.

A year or so ago everyone was in town for the holidays and at the house, and Damn! if that's not what they did--grabbed the Lego's, build them and play with them. Before any other gifts were given or opened. All three are in their 30's (or near enough), and they still did it. It was great. :)

My mom always got me a matchbox car for my stocking. This went on for years after I was done every playing with them. One year she didn't get me one and I commented it was MIA. Ever since I get one every year in my stocking. I've even told her that she can stop but I still get them. And I'm almost 50

:D :D :D Maybe in her own way she's just driving home the point...mothers tend to do that. :D

For me it was pez dispensers, I couldn't tell you what happened to them all though. Now the kiddos get pez and even the five refill kits are gone before presents are opened. They have a metal pez lunchbox I insist they keep the collection in.
