Damn it.

First we have snails, now we have mice.

Couple of days ago we found a shredded grey mouse in the living room. The cats had enjoyed it very much. This morning my big tomcat Jonesey dropped another dead mouse at my feet. He was most upset when I didn't let him eat it.

We must have mice in the walls, somewhere. The garage, perhaps? It's strange because there aren't any droppings in the kitchen cabinets, we never see evidence of them in the house.

Aw, hell. They're probably in the basement.

Damn it, damn it, damn it.

Do those stick 'em traps work? We can't use poison in the house because of the cats. Anyone have any ideas?

LOL consider yourself lucky. First I had squirels and then I had pidgeons. Shall we start calling you the 'the gal who changed mice to men'? :D

Lets be thankful we are not in the Amazon - I hear their rodents are so big that they can eat dogs - lol.

sticky traps work..BUT are cruel as the mouse starves AND you cats will have an easy target and will likely eat it.
A standar "wacking" trap work pretty well with peanutbutter as bait. HAve good success with live "tippy" traps too, but you have to take the guys some where.

Good kitty! He's doing his job. And he ought to be upset with you. He brought this tasty treat to share with you--just like you share kibble with him every morning!--and you rejected it! How could you? :(

Maybe we can put them to some use before we nuke 'em.

I am looking for a picture - I happned to see a doco not too long ago and their rodents are BIG! I just can't think of the name, but Anacondas's eat them for a hearty meal. :D

All I ask is that you do not use sticky paper to kill them - way cruel - use a trap :D Snap!

Why do you have mice, Sarahh? There has to be a food or water source you are inadvertantly providing them. Find that and they will go away and infest the neighbors.

On the other hand, you may not find the reason they've chosen your house so use a trap. I like to bait them with Cheese and Peanut Butter. :D

Any hole you can find you should stuff with fiberglass insulation. They will try and chew through that and die ;)

I know, the idea of using sticky traps really bothers me, too.

We're going to put poison in the garage, I think, just in case, and then some quick kill traps in the basement.

I hope a dopey cat doesn't stick their nose in one.

Warfrin mixed with dry dog or cat food in a pan in the crawl space works... assuming your cats can't get in there. That would be bad :(

Yes.

Gawd. What a mess.

The Capybara is the animal you're thinking of, Charley.

Use the snap traps, sarahh. They're quick. Sticky traps and poison are too slow and painful.

Cap the holes with steel wool. Chewing on those is like chewing on a live battery so the mice don't.

D-Con is what we used when we had cats. It is dry corn with a poison which is also a powerful emetic. Rats can't vomit, so they are affected. Cats, assuming they had any desire whatever to eat corn, vomit rather easily.

I have two cats (about 6 months now) and I just know that soon I'm going to have mice.

Here in the UK we have a little device you can plug into an electrical socket and the mice hate it as it transmits some sort of ultra-sound that they find unacceptable...

So they leave.

Not sure if that will work for you, or even if it's available, but it worked for my neighbour who was over-run with them and couldn't face traps or poison.

We're surrounded by fields here and my parents, who live nearby, have a cat (a Tom) who is a prolific hunter - he brings them into the house, they escape behind the washing machine or fridge and that's it.

Not sure whether this will help or not :)

Ultrasonic Pest devices do work but set only one up at first to make sure it doesn't bother the cats, or you for that matter. (Ultrasonics give me headaches.)

D-Con is a poison trap that uses Warfarin. (Another name for Coumadin for those who are interested.) It this the blood so the animal that ingests it bleeds out, usually into their intestinal tract.

Snap Traps are actually the most humane way to kill the little buggers. (The usually but not always snap their necks.)

Robs advice of using Steel Wool is great. (If you don't think so, chew on some Tin Foil and see how you like it.)

Next time the cat brings you a dead mouse, pick it up while praising the cat. Place it in an out of sight spot from the cat so you can dispose of it and give the cat a treat. This keeps Kitty happy and allows you to ensure their safety from any vermin the vermin is carrying.

I have no mice where I live, then again I have six cats.

Cat

You have mice...

You have cats.

Let them do their job and kill them, reward and praise them for their skill, and dispose of the remains. A well-fed cat will kill, but usually not eat, the mouse, and bring the trophy to you if they know if has a reward involved.

Problem very much solved.

(And this is why every barn has cats. Ours not only kill mice, but garden snakes, lizards, moles, birds, large spiders and palmetto bugs, and anything else that doesn't move fast enough to get out of their way. They're all remarkably healthy at every check-up, despite this activity, and it keeps them toned and sleek.)

Cat -

We have D-con everywhere now. Question for you, please? If one of our cats would ingest a poisoned mouse could they become sick?

I'm not expecting to see any mice but this worries me a bit.

The smell will probably get quite atrocious, depending on the size of the infestation....

I've heard stories of animals dying from ingesting poisoned meat and poisoned food- if they eat a poisoned mouse, I would thinkit would work the same way, but I'm no expert.
