Metalheads & Writers

And you, Mr. Awesome Music Man, would be exactly correct. And back for more. ;)

I'm addicted, and it's all your fault for getting me hooked. Something tells me you might not mind that so much. :D

I know I don't mind it a bit. :)

Broadening someone's musical horizon is something I gladly take the blame for. I'm all warm and fuzzy inside seeing you burn with the glow of discovery. It's actually quite nice to see someone NOT go "What? Heavy Metal? YIKES!" - a reaction I get more than enough even from adults. The term automatically seems to trigger certain expectations in regards to mental faculties and behaviour. Granted, I have long hair, but I do not spend my quality time drinking and chasing skirts (and being an obnoxious asshole). Few metalheads are, although they do exist. Why spend more than a hundred Euros for Wacken tickets only to get piss-drunk and spend the whole festival in a ditch? I don't get people sometimes

Me? Much too busy writing and cultivating my Transformers collection :)

Not to blow my own horn (or Kant's), but you'll find a literal fuckton of awesome music in this thread. I bet Nova is still out there somewhere, banging her cute head to some of the stuff we recommended :)

Welcome to the Pleasuredome!

Many thanks for the compliment. Always nice to bump into someone I can relate to on a music level that appreciates such a wide, encompassing array of music as I do🌹Kant👠👠👠

My old school classic Metal pick for the day “Death - Scream Bloody Gore.

Yeah, this album has a big place in my heart. It has a sense of infancy to it in regards to “death metal”, showcasing a lot of thrash metal influences, but Chuck’s vocal style is what took the music to a more extreme sense for me. Hands down, the only other album around the time of it’s release that rivaled it on my playlist was Obituary’s - Slowly We Rot album. Both are equally appealing to me and I don’t think I will ever be able to say which album I prefer over the other.

A special mention to Stéphan Forté, guitarist of prog band Adagio. His output is very extreme, as far as shred metal goes, but mindbendingly amazing. See this as an idea:
https://youtu.be/e6ogxOKW8AQ

Adagio's one of my favorite bands, and Kelly Sundown is my favorite singer. The new album has both. I love it.

Typical of prog metal, you have to listen to the album 20+ times before you get the groove, but it's very good IMO.

Next up: Apocalyptica. Crazy Finns with cellos playing metal. They do have one or two vocal tracks per album, but most of them are pure instrumental. Not quite up to date with them, but I can vouch for Inquisition Symphony, Cult and their self-titled albums to be ~90% instrumental.

Now you’ve hit on one of my favorites. “World’s Collide” borrows a lot of singers from other bands to collaborate, and their newest album “Shadowmaker” features their new singer, Franky Perez, but I will also vouch that their purely instrumental stuff is amazing. If looking for a more ‘classical’ sound, YouTube is full of videos of people performing metal versions of many songs from various classical composers, and Trans-Siberian Orchastra hits the mark occasionally.

For the dorks and nerds of us, there is Powerglove. They do a lot of metal remakes of other songs; mostly from video games and children’s television shows. They have basically metallized my childhood memories, and I am more than okay with that.

A lot of metal bands have a few instrumental songs. Off the top of my head, I can think of ‘The Call of Krulu’ from Metallica, and ‘Man Made God’ from In Flames as examples. I’m sure a quick Google search would provide a comprehensive list.

A co-worker of mine walked by my office yesterday, then stepped back, popped his head in the office, and with *that* look on his face (you know, the one that usually appears when an offensive scent wafts by) said, "What *are* you listening to??" I just grinned and replied, "Oh, something a friend told me about." ;)

Now that wasn't totally true, but it worked for the moment. While I was listening to a series of Kamelot's tunes, this came along...

Wow.

All this to say, thank you for the new song. :)

I know Powerglove. Good stuff. Also, they were featured in the recent BATMETAL FOREVER. If you haven't seen this...

Buuuuuut(t) I'm more a Machinae Supremacy guy. Because SID* is my hero.

* SID = MOS Technologies Sound Interface Device, the C64 computer's sound chip. As a Euro boy, I spent more time in front of C64s and Amigas than NES's and SNES's, although I can fart Zelda's Overworld theme in my sleep by now too. :)

How have I not seen this yet?! A buddy of mine is hardcore into Metalocalypse and Dethklok, and seeming how he had not shared this yet, I sent each video of the series to him. About an hour later, he called me to laugh hysterically for about a minute and a half, and then hung up... so we thank you; you’ve made the day of multiple metal dorks.

Okay first: meh, not a fan of the vocals, and secondly: TMI. Way too much TMI.

Glad to be of service. And yeah, the MaSu vocalist is DEFINITELY an acquired taste.

And what do you mean with TMI? *snickers* :)

Time for a bit of necromancy, the vile kind.

Well kids, I'm on a Swedish Death Metal bender at the moment. While reading my favourite metal mag, I've found two new bands to add to my collection.

First up, we have Demoniacal. A hearty dose of Dismember and a few sprinkles of Amon Amarth, especially in the melody line department. Fucking brilliant. And again I have to ask myself - Why haven't I heard of them sooner?

https://youtu.be/WCdssBfVZRs <- Their latest album, "Chaos Manifesto"

Well, and then there's Lik (Swedish for 'corpse'). They sound straight-up like early 1992, Sunlight studio. If you have a weak stomach, try not to listen too closely, their lyrics are pure Death Metal - sick gore fetish. So effin' good.

https://youtu.be/BA0i7ubXRuk <- "Carnage". The youtube file is weirdly encoded. My CD has A LOT more bass.

I'm happy. Haven't banged my head like that for close to fifteen years.

You got my attention on the “resurrection” as Dismember has a special place in my heart🌹
“Pieces” and “massive killing capacity” frequent my playlist. I was and still am huge on the Swedish Death Metal scene. More than 90% of my death metal collection of signed bands come from the Scandinavian scene; Sweden more specifically. I’m still speculating the death of Cliff Burton over ther as having an influence on the scene taking off the way it did.👠👠👠Kant🌹

Interesting thought. Sometimes all it takes is one simgle event to set off a huge explosion. I remember something similar being talked about in the "Global Metal" documentary, only there it was a Deep Purple concert in Tokyo, ca. 1973, which caused a spark which, over time, led to the Japanese metal scene as we know it today. And the aftershocks of this single event are even felt in the mainstream, just look at a random number of Japanese TV shows - how many of them have rock/hard rock flavoured theme songs? A much higher average than, say, American or European shows.

I got into Death Metal through Obituary, Massacre, Morbid Angel and, at the same time, Dismember, Entombed and Unleashed. My friends and I vacuumed that shit up like crazy. I like the more "blunt" American style as much as the more melodious Swedish stuff. What I don't particularly care for is the hyper-technical always-blast all the time tech-death stuff (with Nile being one of the few exceptions - they know how to write good songs DESPITE all the finger-breaking instrument athletics). "My" Death Metal has to have lots of rolling double bass drums in it and skull-splitting grooves and vocals coming from out of the deepest grave. Mid- to late Bolt Thrower, for example, I could go for all day, but the two bands I posted above are doing it just right for me too. :)

I started out with Slayer, but that was before “Death Metal” was even thought of as a genre. I soon discovered Venom, Celtic Frost, Barhory, and Possessed. I had Obituary’s demo tape when they were known as X- ecutioner before I discovered a band called Death. Love the band, but in my eyes Chuck was no John Tardy, so Obituary holds the #1 spot for my favorite Death Metal band. However, when I discovered the Scandinavian scene, I emersed myself in anything, everything I could find🌹

You aren’t old,LC🌹didn’t you just turn 30ish yesterday like the rest of us?👠👠👠

Hey man, speak for yourself. :p

@Blind_Justice: 'Global Metal' documentary you say? Somehow I've missed that one, but now I have something to look up and watch today while I'm painting later. I thank you.

'Reeling'; Nux Vomica

I'm sure I've mentioned it before, but there's that old age thing ....

Can summay'all give it a listen and opine?

I really like the music, but I can't stand the verbal distortion. It's only in part of the tune though, so I can zone out for that little bit and focus on the metal.

That's some pretty majestic, epic stuff. If you want something similar, maybe without growls or distorted vocals, you might want to try Solstice, Calisto or, for something a bit more experimental, Long Distance Calling.

Okay, I’m a movie kinda guy... err, girl... whatever (LoL), but anyway I went to see Deadpool 2 opening night and this fucking song from the New Mission Impossible movie is stuck in my head now(grr) oh, well, can anyone else relate to this shit?

Sorry, but I hate Imagine Dragons with a burning passion. Artsy-fartsy ex-indie hipsters. Yuck. I'll take Limp Bizkit's MI2 song about this choked-out dreck any day.

This one at least rocks.

I’m not a fan of them either, that one song fits the new MI movie. It’s about all I can say, but when my daughter downloaded it after we got home, I knew I was about to be tortured. I’m not really a Limp Bizkit fan either. I might have to raid my trunk of CDs for something to drown out my daughter’s radio. At least I got her hooked on Lord of the Lost and KMFDM
