O.K. We have a great thread going about songs that are really poems being sung. Now lets whittle that down a bit. How about phrases or metaphors in songs that really blow you away, or at least catch your fancy? - I will start us off with four easy ones. :)

Jimmy Buffet - He Went to Paris (a great song!)

While the tears were a-fallin' he was recallin'
Answers he never found
So he hopped on a freighter, skidded the ocean And left England without a sound.

Crosby, Stills, and Nash - Southern Cross

We got eighty feet of waterline, nice Jamaican way. (or, "nicely making way" - I only really like the first version.)

Chuck Berry (Johnny Rivers' hit) - Memphis

With "hurry home" drops on her cheek that trickled from her eye.

Paul Simon - Kathy's Song (one of my favorites!)

And as I watch the drops of rain
Weave their weary paths and die

I know that I am like the rain
There but for the grace of you go I.

Now let us see what you have got!

Funny you had this idea. I was wondering if I should include the lyrics of U2's Even Better Than The Real Thing. I don't think those lyrics are that remarkable, but there's a line that has always caught my attention in a special way. If you think about its implications on this celebrity-worshipping superficiality-driven bonfire of vanities of a world, you'll read it almost like a one-verse poem:

You're honey child to a swarm of bees
Gonna blow right through you like a breeze
Give me one last dance
We'll slide down the surface of things

Eagles

I happen to like this whole stanza, but i particularly think the third from bottom is what sticks in my memory the most.

Lyin' Eyes

The Eagles

City girls just seem to find out early,

how to open doors with just a smile.

A rich old man and she won't have to worry;

she'll dress up all in lace and go in style.

Late at night a big old house gets lonely;

I guess every form of refuge has its price.

And it breaks her heart to think her love is only

Given to a man with hands as cold as ice.

gods, there are so many ....

.. froms stvie nicks, Bella Donna
......
And the lady's feeling
Like the moon that she loved
Don't you know that the stars are
A part of us
And the lady's feeling
Just like the moon that she loved

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
and from Rhiannon,
Rhiannon rings like a bell thru the night
And wouldn't you love to love her
She rules her life like a bird in flight
And who will be her lover...
All your life you've never seen
A woman--taken by the wind
Would you stay if she promised you heaven
Will you ever win...
She is like a cat in the dark
And then she is the darkness
She rules her life like a fine skylark--
And when the sky is starless--
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

i guess thats all for now :)

and another

this one, well..lets jsut say , i ummm... know the lyrics by "heart", forgive the pun :)

its not quite sung poetry, but , its right up there....maybe cause its such a good ballad , and , well , its easy to relate to....

Magic Man

Cold late night so long ago
When I was not so strong you know
A pretty man came to me
Never seen eyes so blue
I could not run away
It seemed we'd seen each other in a dream
It seemed like he knew me
He looked right through me
"Come on home, girl" he said with a smile
"You don't have to love me yet
Let's get high awhile
But try to understand
Try to understand
Try try try to understand
I'm a magic man."

Winter nights we sang in tune
Played inside the months of moon
Never think of never
Let this spell last forever
Summer lover passed to fall
Tried to realize it all
Mama says she's worried
Growing up in a hurry

"Come on home, girl" mama cried on the phone
"Too soon to lose my baby yet my girl should be at home!"
"But try to understand, try to understand
Try try try to understand
He's a magic man, mama
He's a magic man"

"Come on home, girl" he said with a smile
"I cast my spell of love on you a woman from a child!
But try to understand, try to understand
I'm a magic man!"

from an old country song....

"Son, I've made a life' out of readin' people's faces, and knowin'

what their cards were by the way they held their eyes-

and if you don't mind my sayin' I would say you're out of aces-

and for one taste of your whiskey

I will give you some advice"-

ahhh, alas a classic....
and oh so true....

Cool

This is a great idea for a thread. I know there are a million haunting song lines that I'm forgetting, but here’s a few that I think are good.

I was a glutton at the banquet and I spilt the finest wine
Trod the pyramids and ruins of Angkor
I kissed the Mona Lisa, and I breakfasted with kings
And I touched the nerve of nature in the raw

Mick Jagger "Wandering Spirit"

Augustin knew temptation
He loved women, wine and song
And all the special pleasures
Of doing something wrong

Rolling Stones "Saint Of Me"

I wanna say what Grandma said, lying on her dying bed
"I ain't been cheated, nor mistreated, and I don't act senile yet"

Georgia Satellites "Another Chance"

Intoxicated by the orchids abandoned in the garden
Demanding morphine curse my soul is burning
Stranded in the sweet wonderings
breathing the pale moon silver
Torn painted lips tasting the last drops of life

Ramones "Born To Die In Berlin"

Some people say that love is a prison
And no one really wants to be free

Steve Earle "All Of My Life"

I look forward to reading more of these. The "hurry-home drops" is indeed an excellent poetic image!

Calypso lyrics

There are many great lyrics that come out of the islands. Here is one by "The Mighty Sparrow" that has always made me laugh at its truth! :D

"A man don't mind a woman make him feel how he look. But don't make him feel how he smell!"
