Has come and gone, but I'd like to thank all those that serve and have served. It is not the poet that gives us freedom of speech, but the Soldiers. It is not the journalist that gives us freedom of the press, but the Soldiers. And it is not the lawyer that gives us freedom of religion, but the Soldiers. And the price they paid was in blood and not money. And God bless the merchant marines who were only recently given veteran status even though they had more casualties than any other branch of service in WW2. And say a prayer for my brother-in-law who is a civilian contractor in Baghdad.

And if you are in France and don't speak German, you are welcome.

Thank you WD

and to those brothers and sisters no longer with us, may your canteen be empty on Fiddler's Green.

Shame on us all, dolly for letting that day go by without a mention. But in all actuality, we can remember those brave ones, any day and should more often.

That's scarey for your brother-in-law.

I watched Band of Brothers that day... well half of it and the rest this week when I could not sleep.

I had only two uncles who served and are both now deceased.... but I remember going to the parade with my one aunt and uncle as a child.

and bless the nurses that went to Vietnam, they were angels

and she only remembered the gunner that never looked at her, only protecting her, and when she walked off, said keep your head down ma'am

Back when the Canadians had balls.

Normandy

Allied losses had been high: 2,500 men at OMAHA alone, another 2,500 among the American airborne divisions, almost 1,100 for the Canadians, and some 3,000 for the British—more than 9,000 men in all, one-third of whom were killed in action.

Normandy

Bush will be there tomorrow. Overlooking the 9000 crosses.

Special Week

And grows more so with every year passing.

i'm not sure, and don't wish to google, but fewer and fewer of the "survivors" remain alive.

And i detect an ... "on point" for this particular subject with you. Would it be too invasive to ask why?

Did you see "Band of Brothers?" The 101st airborne trained here. I've walked Currahee Mountain where they had to run.

Mmm hmm.

Odd you mention the Screaming Eagles ... i got sent to Fort Campbell as my first duty assignment after training.

Many fond ... Destiny strip with the fog just breaking; " 'Aw shit we're surrounded.' 'Then pedal turn and pull the trigger;' " 'Ain't no way you're getting this big honkin' thing in there.' 'Watch this;'" " 'Oh shit, we're IMC under goggles!' ' (Doing a 180 just above the trees) Oh hell no we're not;'"

and a few painful ... Gander incident and going through a troop's hopes/dreams realizing he'll never fulfill them, "i've decided not to come home," ...

memories.

I was in the Navy. We got to shoot 45s once that were bored down to 22s. Was a weatherman on a carrier. Once we stayed out 128 days when the marines were killed in Lebanon. Every 45 days we got 2 beers. The Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders came out to see us. Some fool groped one. He was flown off the ship that day, and is probably still in Leavenworth.

One of my favorite people.

Did carrier landings in a UH-1H off the Georgia coast once, while still in the 101st. One of the funniest damn experiences of my life,

"LT, when you get close to the deck, drop power and plant the fucker, or you'll be doing a hovering auto for real when we run out of fuel. If the boat drops right before, it'll be from 30 feet instead of 3."
