Okay I have to know. Since I have been here I have seen this "Meh" mentioned in many feedbacks some in mine and many as I look at comments on other stories.

Today I get this one.

Meh...

Five pages on #37 is a red flag but I looked anyway. Too many fetishes crammed in here. Lots of !! but the emotion they're implying just isn't there. Won't be voting or going back to #1.

Just now while posting in another thread I saw that someone has "Meh" in their AV.

Obviously it is not a term of endearment but what the hell does it mean? is it an abbreviation? An expression I have never heard? I never saw it until this site.

as an aside to the comment I posted, I find myself surprised that anyone would read a chapter 37 to start a series.

Did you google it? If you had, you wouldn't have had the opportunity to talk about your story, though.

It's the written equivalent of the shrug. It means "so what?" or "who cares?"

I have explained before That I do not "google" everything. I am old school and would rather ask. I unlike some people don't need to maintain an aura of omniscience.;)

So thanks for the answer. "Who cares?" that makes sense for most of the times I've seen it.

And yes I mentioned my series, by posting a negative remark about it. One that as we discussed in another thread I will leave. Honestly. I was thinking he was being cool saying he wasn't going to vote, but my rating did drop at the time of this comment. Methinks he lied.

"Meh" mostly means neutral. It isn't good and it isn't bad.

Be more concerned if you get a "feh" (fucking eh, disgust).

I wouldn't say that "meh" was meant to be neutral. Neutral is not commenting at all.

You'd think they wouldn't comment if they felt neutral, but some are spiteful thinking it's their duty to take someone down a peg or two voicing their "meh".

I mostly see meh in online gaming chat boxes for a blah emote.

Well, then, they aren't feeling/responding with neutrality, are they?

"Meh" is well beyond apathy. "Eh?" (rising inflection as in a question--not pronounced "ay" as in Western Canada--more like "uh") is apathy, to the extent apathy can be vocalized. Translates as "I am utterly unimpressed; I regard the person, place or thing as unworthy of any interest on my part".

To distinguish, the term "Meh" is active disparagement, deprecation; "not only am I unimpressed, I find that the person, place or thing is positively distasteful to me."

When it got put in the dictionary the definition was "an interjection expressing indifference or boredom". As to the "why comment at all" question I think the confusion is that "meh" is typically used as a response to a question rather than an independent statement.

"Do you want to get ice cream?"

"Meh."

I don't think it should be used as an adjective though.

What dictionary is that? It's not in Webster's Collegiate, which is regarded as the quickest to pick up new terms. Nor is it in the American Heritage.

Meh is a trite dismissal. Not as extreme as saying "I think it's shite" or "I fucking hate it!" "Meh" is a passive "not my cup of tea" or "Doesn't really register with me...not my thing" minus any sense of obligation to explain why. "What do you think of this?" "Meh."

I have also seen in used in terms of negative description with the same purpose of not wanting to expend the energy to explain further. Such as: "How was you day?" "Meh."
