My ex and I used to bicker back and forth all the time til it got to the point where I would attempt to just shut my mouth and let the moment pass. I am now hearing from people that knew us as a couple about how 'embarrassed' they were for the two of us. Now it makes me embarrassed to have been like that...

Does it embarrass you to see others bicker in public settings?

Only if there is NO place to go while they are bickering. Like if they are blocking the only exit and you don't want to listen to it. Unless you tackle them both you can't do anything.

....."Blue 42, blue 42.....hut-hut"...lol.

The Bickersons"
This old time radio series from the 1940's was an extremely popular situation comedy performed by Don Ameche and Frances Langford as battling spouses John and Blanche Bickerson. Other actors portrayed the parts in later years.

The unhappy couple was routinely overheard during their vituperative pillow talk sessions, spouting marital mayhem drenched in caustic wit.

YES - I do get embarrassed if a couple fights around me. If they are aware of me, and try to get me to take sides, I'm cool, and I can leave with a "No way, I'm not the ref here!"

it's when they are so wrapped up in each other that they forget me, that I get mortified. I feel like I'm eavesdropping or something. My parents never fought in front of me - I don't know how to cope with it very well.

Can't stand it. If it's someone I know I tell 'em to take it private. If it's strangers in public...well, I've been known to tell it to them, too.

Oddly, that only seems to apply to couples for me. When friends squabble I'll get in the middle of it or start calling out (really loudly) things like, "POPCORN!! GIT YER FRESH, HOT POPCORN HERE!" :D

I find it embarrasing as well... not that they should be lovey dovey to please me... but keep the voices down where I don't have to know that he cums too fast or she spends too much money...etc...

The Battling Bickersons were funny though... :)
