Medical Lab Work. Bleah.

I was told to get the same types of things done after getting better from being sick this last time. But I'm really, really really, REALLY afraid of needles...

So I haven't made any appointments yet, and will probably put it off again until I die...

Dear ss,

I have difficulties with the lab techs missing my vein. My veins roll or collapse and so, the successful techs use a small butterfly, tourniquet tightly, and slowly roll your wrist with their fingers on the favoured vein; as soon as they can feel the vein come to the surface, hold that position and then let them draw. If the blood doesn't come up into the catheter tube then they've missed and should try again before hurting or bruising you. Sometimes, it takes two vacuum testtubes to empty the air from the catheter and the techs should be encouraged to waste a tube rather than your flesh.

Hope this isn't too late to help.

Good luck, its going to be ok. I know how you feel about them sticking you. Last time I got tired of being poked over and over, so I just said give it to me and did it myslef on the frist try. Talk about luck had not drawed blood in years.

I have a doctor's appointment in about an hour in which they plan to do all sorts of hideous laboratory experiments on my bits.

I know they'll be stealing some blood. Who knows what other heinous acts will occur?

Then in a week I get to go back so they can they commit further atrocities on my person.

In truth, I have a few ongoing issues of concern so I'll be quite relieved to see the doctor, and then, of course, quite relieved that it's over.

There was no choice about the wait, though. I couldn't schedule an appointment until my show was done.

Still - bleah. Technicians who draw blood from me always have difficulties, which, in turn, causes me difficulties. Let's hope they are skilled this morning.

*shudder*

Oh, wait - where's SubJoe? I hear he's really into bloodletting.
Oh... dearest... I feel for you (literally quite often ;))

I hate having blood drawn. I have one beautiful nurse at the Tropical Disease Hospital whom I'd bleed for any time, but the rest... ughhh. I'd much rather they'd have put a tap in several years ago and just topped up when they needed.

Thank God you don't have to do the electrical nerve conductivity tests... dem needils is lllooooooonnnnnngggggggg :D

Several years ago I was in the hospital for surgery.

Every morning a group of students came in to practice getting blood from me and to try getting an IV started in my hand.

After a few days of being stabbed multiple times I refused to cooperate. They told me I was rude.

I know your pain, Sarah. My veins/vessels don't cooperate either. I was supposed to have some tests months ago, but after the tech stuck me several times with no success, they postponed, and I never went back.

Damn, if you lived in the Basin I could refer you to Mama's lab where she knows who can really stick and who fumbles. Where is teleportation when we really need it?

Best of luck, luv, and I hope that whatever they find in minor and readily fixable.:kiss::rose::rose:

They always had trouble with me, too. My veins did all the rolling and hiding tricks. One day a more experienced nurse asked if anyone used my hand before. My negative reply just had her shaking her head. Thanks to her I now know that a butterfly in my hand works perfect and seldom leaves a bruise. I tell whoever is drawing my blood each time to use that method.

Yes, dey is... and each time I had nerve conduction tests, my neuropathy worsened. Go figure.

LOL That's kind of the way I do things, "Hi, this is what's wrong with me and I need a prescription for (fill in the blank here). Thanx." :D
