Started reading it but lost track of it.
Narrator is recruited from the midwest for a school in California near San Franscisco, he's provided a female roomate who is basically MCed to be his partner. Everyone at the school is either the best in their discipline or the companion for someone who is. I believe the narrator was going to be the best author or essayist.
Was under mind control, but nothing was overt about it in the first 5 chapters or so that I read.
