(Unless it was written that he was held back a year or two, so he's a sophomore or junior, BUT his age would have to be disclosed in such a tale as to not freak Laurel out!)

Here's an idea open for discussion.

Its a small town near a collage.

The woman has a overbearing husband and she is submissive to him.
