A thread over on the general board made me think of this.
What do each of you think is the most comfortable mattress that you've used and why?

Those new air pressure select comfort ones?

Tempurpedic ones?

Just a good quality (sealy posturpedic?) normal one?

Straw tick on the floor?

I'm looking in the next year or so to get a new bed and matress and everything and wanted some real life feedback.

I'm by mattresses as I am my man's dick... the harder, the better.

Willing,

Why is that? what benefits do you see to a hard rather than soft mattress?

Technically harder is better for your back and such but personally I prefer softer mattresses. What I've found is that I love a matress for about three months....then I can't stand it. I think the problem is that you never really get to sleep on the mattress you just lay on one after another in a furnature store and then randomly pick the one that feels best. Generally what I end up doing is reverting back to my college years with egg creates and feather beds to make the mattress softer. But that doesn't really help you....this might...my parents recently bought a Sterns and Foster and they can't stop talking about it. According to them it's the best mattress they've ever owned. The problem is they tend to be VERY expensive but my dad has back problems and a S&F came highly reccomended....

Hope this helps...

I bought a new mattress last winter and I love it! My sister came up and spent the nite and I let her sleep on it and she loved it so much she wrote down the name of it and bought one for herself. It's a Simmons 900 or something - can't remember the exact model - but it cost $1100 for a queen sized. Which is way more than I've ever spent on anything like that before. But I figured hell I'm getting older, joints are not as free as they used to be, back gets out of wack very easily now days. So what the hell?

After years of sleeping on a water bed I was afraid I wouldn't be able to adjust to a real mattress - but this one rocks.

my back is rather sensitive to a soft mattress and will usually hurt if it's too soft. the mattress I have at home, the salesguy said the next hardest thing is the floor. while I'm here at school, I have a piece of plywood put under the mattress to help make it harder. It all depends on what you feel comfortable with. The best thing to do when mattress shopping is to try out different ones by laying and sitting on them. And start with what you think you'd like as opposed to what you think others like, remember, you're the one that has to sleep on it.

I finally got rid of my old mattress last summer and got
my sister's old mattress plus her egg crate pad, which
flipped upside down (the egg crate part is upside down)
helps me sleep better.......

Those Tempurpedic (sp?) mattresses look good but
are they worth it in the long run? The pillows they make
are expensive enough, and I had considered buying one
of their pillows because of my neck.

Best thing to do is keep trying out diff. mattresses in
the furniture or bedding store .....good luck! :)

I don't know about the Tempurpedic matresses, but I bought one of the Novaform memory foam pillows at Costco a couple of years ago, and it was absolutely worth every penny (about $30). It's still in perfect condition, and my neck pain has decreased significantly. I'm considering buying a memory foam matress topper at Costco as well. ..if it helps, it's a bargain at $100, and if it doesn't, they have an excellent return policy.

This was a great thread idea! I'm in the market for a new mattress myself, since my current one is a remnant from my husband's bachelor days (just a cheap mattress, over 7 years old). Reviews of the different types are most welcome, since you never really know how a mattress will feel once you get it home and sleep on it for a few weeks.

Has anybody bought a tempurpedic/memory foam mattress? My husband uses the foam pillows, and I've found that they retain a smell after about six months. I was curious if the mattresses are any better.

Does anyone have a pillow-top mattress that they could review for us? I know they're harder to move around on, since they're not springy - but do you sleep well enough on it to stay in one position all night?

Thanks, Jjb, for starting this thread :) Hopefully it'll help me out, too!

I know 3 people who have bought the pillow top mattress and HATE it. That pillowy stuff gets beaten down in a few months and is awful to sleep on after that. My bed has SOME of that memory foam stuff in it - but just a bit. I tried out the memory foam mattress and it made me feel like I was suffocating, like it was closing around my neck or something. It was very hard to roll over too! I didn't care for it.

Thanks for the info! I had a friend who had a pillowtop and didn't care for it, but I wasn't sure if it was just her obsessive compulsiveness or if the mattress really did suck. I'll steer clear of those :)

Missingmeds, how long have you had your mattress? Can you give me a few reasons why I might want to consider one? Is there anything you don't like about it?

We have a Simmons Beautyrest. It's not technically a pillow top, but it is very cushy and comfortable.

Lynxie, allergy control polypropylene pillow covers keep smells, sweat, dust, and everything else away from your pillow, but they don't affect breathability. I think we got ours at Target or Walmart in the pillow/bed accessories section (they're usually with the zippered plastic matress covers).

I don't have a matresse at all. I have a WATERBED!!!

I can think of many thing to do with it. :D

I liked the Sleep Number bed at the mall. What I thought was desirable about it was the flexibility to increase/decrease the firmness. What was less than desirable was the price! And no, I didn't buy it...

I have had it since May, there is absolutely nothing that I don't like about it and noone that has slept on it can say anything bad about it either. I find that they stay where you put them, the sheets stay on, and it is great not to wake up with my back killing me every night.

My biggest problem with it is that once I get into it, I don't move and I tend to end up sleeping all night in the same position.

I just have a normal mattress. I don't care much for soft mattresses. I like the firmer ones.

so how much do the memory foam ones run?

i have a tempurpedic matress and i like it.......i've had it just over a year and it's a great sleeper....efore the tempurpedic, i had a top of the line beautirest for about 10 years.......when it finally started to sag and be uncomfortable, we bought another one.......it was nice for 3 months and then started to sag and be a horrid sleeper....we changed to the tempurpedic and have been quite happy........so far......

My .02 1/2 cents

We have a pillowtop mattress and box spring set. It's not super firm, but at the "in-between" firm and skooshy. I'm religious about flipping or rotating it every 3-4 months...that way it doesn't break down as quick. Have had it about 3 years or so so it's not a P.O.S. (yet!). The ONLY down side imho is that -- if you are a warm sleeper -- you'll sleep even warmer. I think something w/ the pillowtop keeps body heat in and it stays warm. Just my opinion.

The in-laws just got a Sleep Number bed about 6 mos ago. They didn't get the top of the line, but got the mid-range one with the dual air baggie chambers and without the memory foam topper. They did a butchering number on their old pillow-top mattress -- cut off the thinner pillow top side to use on top of the Sleep Number and then put a mattress cover over the whole works. At first I was like "WTF?" But...after house sitting, sleeping on the Sleep Number mattress then going back to ours was weird. I think I like the Sleep Number better.

Waterbed

I've had a waterbed for 30 years. It is great. No pressure spots.
My but sinks in if I'm on my back. My hip and shoulder sink in if I'm on my side. No one point has much more pressure than another. The problem most people had with waterbeds is that they didn't put in enough water, so they sank down in the middle when they got in them. MUST have a good heater also!

The memory foam beds sound like a good idea, but I'm afraid the foam will not last very long and "Forget" how to remember my shape. And they are costly for good ones.

The idea of a good bed is to support all your parts equally, and keep your spine straight, no matter what position you are sleeping in. I roll around so this is important to me.
Also, get a proper pillow that will help keep your spine in your neck straight.

Bed,
Bed is a bundle of paradoxes; we go to it with reluctance, yet we quit it with regret; and we make up our minds every night to leave it early, but we make up our bodies every morning to keep it late.

I know that my set ran over $600 for the mattress and the box spring and come with a 10 year warranity if for any reason it becomes uncomfortable. They only sell them in sets because the box spring is different for them than any other mattress.

I don't get the pressure point thing from this set either.

Wow, $600 is considerably cheaper than I thought they'd be. Maybe I'll look for some vendors in the area that sell them and go give them a test drive :) Thanks for the info, Missingmeds.

Unfortunately, it'll be at least another month or so til I can actually shop for a mattress. I'm still recovering from an operation I had on my shoulder, and can't lay down flat comfortably yet. I'm currently sleeping propped up by 3 pillows with 2 under my knees and 1 under my arm for support. Ugh.
