Thomas Davies, 31, was sat slowly sipping his pint in the Arkstar Pub. Life was looking good. After spending five years as a lecturer in statistics at City College Southampton, Tom had moved two months ago to the center of all things British, London itself. Having secured a teaching position at the London Metropolitan University, he was ready to star the good life. Southampton was alright, but as a single man in in his early30s, London was the place to be.
Women were always not far from Tom’s mind. At the moment, his mind drifted across three of them. First, there was Julia, his ex-fiancé. He had fallen completely in love with this woman, even more so after she accepted his offer of marriage. Living together in their Southampton townhouse had only increased his desire to live out his life with her by his side. Besides, the sex was mind-blowing. A year and a half ago, Tom had traveled to Bristol to attend a professional conference only to find upon arrival that the conference had been cancelled. Taking the next possible set of trains back to Southampton he arrived late at night, not bothering to call Julia to tell her about his change in plans. Quietly using his keep to open their front door, Tom was confronted by the unmistakable, loud moans and groans of exuberant sex. He left his own house and never looked back.
The image of the second woman, Carrie, was very different. They had met in a pub just a few days ago, chatted each other up, and arranged at a dinner date. At 24, a full seven years younger than Tom, she represented youth as well as beauty. Their date went well and ended with a much warmer kissing than one often receives after one date. They quickly made a date for two weeks hence, with many hints of sex in the not-too-distant future. And, Carrie was, unmistakably, hot. Tom could feel his pants getting tighter just at the thought of her.
But the woman that was most on his mind was simply an old friend. During his last two years at university, Tom lived in a group house with his mates that included, among others, Susan Watkins. He and Sue had become buddies almost from Day 1, hanging out, going to movies, confidentially detailing their love lives – on those occasions when either of them had one – with one another. Upon graduation Tom moved away directly to pursue graduate studies but they had kept in touch some via email and Instagram. A couple of times when he came to London they had even met up for lunch. But, they had not seen each other in nearly five years. Sue’s presence in London wasn’t what drew Tom there but knowing that he might see her occasionally was an added plus.
Inadvertently, Tom had chosen a seat that the café table that allowed him to see passersby on Holloway Road. Recognizing Sue by her walk as she approached the door to Arkstar, Tom could feel a warm glow flow through his body. Sue often felt like the sister that he never had.
Life was good and getting better.
