OK, all you flag-waving patriots who like to prattle about all the wonderful "freedom" we have here in the good ole U.S.A. A week of protests is going on now in Washington, D.C. It began Monday, the 23rd, but tomorrow is the big day. Not much has happened yet, but all the indications are that the police are gearing up for massive repression of peaceful protests. So far the victims of the police state drive have been mainly Arab-Americans and immigrants. But can it be doubted that the real target for repression is the anti-globalization and anti-war movements, and ultimately any protests against the established order? On this thread, I'll be doing updates every time the cops trample on people's rights in D.C. (Damn, I may be typing my fingers off!)

Let's see how much this truly is "the land of the free"-- or whether the claims that we are free are a hollow mockery, a sham and a lie the better to deceive and enslave us!

Here, here! Can I get a hallelujah! Somebody say hallelujah!

Interesting comment there, acitore_vuli. Yes, there are a lot of things about the U.S. I like. I like the relatively high standard of living, and the relatively high degree of personal freedom we have compared to a lot of other places (although that seems to be changing). I like the people (well, most of them, anyway) and the land, although I don't care too much for the desert. I don't like the pervasive racism, and I don't like the capitalist system, and I definitely don't like Bush & Co.

If you don't like the Capitalist system, move to Cuba. You will be way more appreciated there than here in the US of A.

Heck, I'd even help you get the air fare to get there.

America Love it or leave it.............

Does that mean that when something is wrong people should shut up and take it and not complain? Asshole..

No, they definitely should complain. Protest can be good, beneficial, and help to raise awarness of important issues. In an age though where everbody seems to be protesting everything, the act loses it's effectiveness and comes off as simply an annoyance. I happen to stand by this country and it's capitialist system, as it seems that most people, despite political differences do. Redwave on the other hand Redwave does not believe in the system that has allowed him to freely express his views and work towards a goal which will not benefit you, me or anyone else, except the uneducated, lazy, unskilled, unimaginative, unable, unevolved, cowardly, and short sighted. Redwave's system breeds corruption and favoritism at only the very very very highest levels. The former paper tiger that was the Soviet Union is a perfect example of what his ideas, ideals, and perceptions of the world bring. I;m sure if he got his way no protesting the ineveitable food lines and such would be allowed. I wonder what kind of life he's led to breed such resentment towards a society that, while flawed, has worked pretty well. We've got a peaceful transfer of power between leaders for 222 years, more resources than most nations than most others could dream, even our poor have a great many opportunities (that some do not or unable o take advantge of them is another discussion totally), what more can we ask for?

Or whether the claims that the protests are "peaceful", like so many other protests, are absolutely bogus.

the cops aren't going to repress anybody peacefull witha permit, but if they break any more store windows I will be pissed, that's not repression, that's protection. I agree with many of the protestors points but they need not be destructive, that only closes people to their views.

Redwave, just out of curiousity, have you actually BEEN to any of these DC protests?

and do you have to try to get to work tomorow and fight your way through the stench of people who have been protesting for attention for too long.

Protest is as American as the Constitution..

The freedom to assemble to regress you grievances, is a guarantee that must never be broken. However, when an assembled mass begins destruction of private property, and threatens the well being of innocents, the contract is broken and authorities MUST move in! To claim persecution is erroneous and a complete lie. If you are told to move by a police officer and don't, you are obstructing that officer in performing his/her duty.
If I came down there and began busting protesters up, who would they call? The police-state oppressors? Hypocrites and phoneys! :D

I did go to the D.C. demo in April of this year. As to whether I'll be at this one-- I'd rather not say.
