Boys and girls at a Massachusetts elementary school have been banned from bringing Valentine’s Day candy or cards over cultural equality issues and federal guidelines regulating candy.

Parents of students at Salemwood Elementary School in Malden, Mass, received a letter informing them of the policy – that impacts not just Valentine’s Day – but all holidays.

“We have many different nationalities, cultures and languages spoken,” Principal Carol Keenan told Fox News. “Because of that we don’t honor specific holidays.”

Keenan said she did not want some students feeling left out.

“This is done with all good intentions – to have all students be accepted, to have all students feel like they belong,” she said.

ISLAMABAD (AP) — Romance is not dead in Pakistan, but it’s under attack.

Conservatives in Pakistan tacked up posters urging people to boycott Valentine’s Day on Thursday, saying it’s a western-inspired event that’s spreading vulgarity in their country. Romantics fought back with an arsenal of flowers, pink teddy bears and heart-shaped balloons.

“Here in this part of Pakistan we are faced with bomb blasts, and we don’t have much opportunity to enjoy and celebrate so to me it is one of those few occasions to celebrate,” said Taimur Hassan, a 29-year-old man working in the northwestern city of Peshawar. He was out buying a gift for his girlfriend, and looking for something different than a stuffed bear he got her last year.

That’s exactly the type of behavior many of Pakistan’s conservatives are worried about.

For them, Valentine’s Day is nothing but an occasion to encourage illicit relations between the country’s young — unmarried — males and females. It’s a sign that Western culture and values are eating away the fabric of Pakistan’s traditional, Islamic society. Valentine’s Day, they say, is not a Pakistani holiday and not part of the culture here.

In the southern city of Karachi, billboards implored people to “Say no to Valentine’s Day.” The “no” was encapsulated in a black heart, and the sign said the holiday reflects insensitivity and ignorance of Islam.

Tanzeem-e-Islami, the organization that put up the billboards, called on the interior ministry to suspend cell phone service on the holiday that celebrates love. Group spokesman Muhammad Samee said many young people use mobile phones to send Valentine’s Day greetings and suspending the service for the day would save people from “moral terrorism.”

Head of Da’wa and Islamic Sharia Orientation Unit in the Social Reforms Society Dr Essa Al-Zafiri has advised the public to be aware of the dangerous repercussions of adopting non-Muslim practices and celebrations, reports Al-Seyassah daily.

Al-Zafiri also condemned the media hype on such celebrations by inciting people to exchange gifts or SMS on Valentine’s Day — a practice that originated from Rome. He attributed the spread of such practices in Muslim communities to the alleged loss of the Islamic identity amongst some of them. He said celebrating occasions which are not part of Islam is considered an imitation of the West.

He also appealed to the media to refrain from misleading the people, pointing out that the concerned authorities must take serious measures to ban celebrations which are not part of Kuwaiti traditions and customs.

Egyptian Cleric: Anyone Who Celebrated Valentine’s Day Will “Burn In Hell”…

An Egyptian Salafi preacher said those celebrating Valentine ’s Day or selling items related to the event are “committing a sin and will burn in hell”.

In an online video posted Wednesday, Ahmad Mahmoud Abdullah, known as “Abu Islam” and owner of the private television channel of “al-Ummah,”referred to February 14 as ‘adultery day’.

“February 14th,we celebrate “adultery” day. The Christian church will surely celebrate this day but I urge all Muslims and those who fear God, not to use anything tinted in red. Even al-Ahli team will not wear its red jersey” he said referring to the Egyptian national football team.

Abu Islam added that women going out to celebrate this day are considered ‘adultery and prostitution’.

I am not surprised they are going after Valentine's Day, but I thought the reason would be something along the lines of its unfair to children with confused sexual identities or think they might be gay, or that it promotes the traditional ideal of heterosexual love, or something along those lines.

I wasn't expecting the excuse for banning the holiday to be "cultural diversity" issues. That surprises me. I guess BB is saying that some ethnicities are offended by Valentine's day such as Islamic cultures and that's why the school banned it.
