My curiosity was piqued when I saw on this site; a meteor so large that it could crush and annihilate a city.

I have been in an "America Rocks" high for most my life. I was thinking about how the survivors of this country would react in an event of this magnitude.

I believe the USA (Americans) would rush to the aid of the unfortunate from the 4 corners to help.

How would other countries react to something like this?

I'm no expert but I suspect they would soon have their own problems to worry about. I'm thinking extinction level event. It would probably start a world-wide ice age. I also think you give people that are in "survivor mode" too much credit.

Considering the chaos and looting that was seen in New Orleans. And the lack of chaos and looting after the Indonesian Tsunami and the Japanese Earthquake and Tsunami. I suspect the US would react very badly and the rest of the world would act well.

I hear ya! However, I am an optimist...I do want our civilization to survive. I believe we have the brains to pull it off.

I can only imagine tho, how the "new" beginning will be...

I envision "Mad Max" type governing....at first.

The first Mad Max movie was before the fall of civilization. It's last days. There was still some law and order. And gasoline too.

Imagine another Mexico- or Hudson-Bay-sized event. Something ten klicks across whacks Earth. Climate goes zap. Humanity goes zap, unless we've established colonies. Otherwise, kiss humanity's ass bye-bye. Are you prepared for extinction? Say your prayers, suckers.

Yes! And...if half of the USA was annihilated....and you were a survivor...WHERE would you want to FLEE to if you chose not to stay in the USA to help reconstruct?

I suppose I am just wondering how dedicated Americans are to this country and it's citizens.

shrug. Personally, I will do till I die in the USA. period

All the oily soot in the air will act like floor dry and capture the space dust. The skies will be clean as a whistle in a matter of hours.

An impact that large would be impossible to survive.

But other natural disasters? Locally we have several volunteer emergency response teams with specialist survivor location techniques and equipment.

They've been to Italy for the earthquakes, to Japan for the tsumami, to Indonesia, to Pakistan for floods, to Haiti...

They can mobilise within a couple of hours. They are self financed and supported by their employers (and colleagues who will cover absences from work).

We also have qualified volunteers who go to many countries to provide medical assistance.

The UK government and UK charities have disaster emergency stores that can be transported anywhere in the world.

For a massive disaster the UK's contribution might be relatively small but it will be there quickly. Unlike some countries offers of the equivalent of millions of US dollars the UK's promised financial aid will be paid.

We have the Disasters Emergency Committee, a group of UK aid charities that coordinate the UK's response AND work together to make a joint appeal for funds from the UK public as soon as a disaster is reported.

But for the scenario suggested? No country and no agencies could cope.

Extinction events won't be fun.

Not for us, anyway,

Outside observers may be in stitches.

Has it occurred to you that we might be facing a different threat already?
Four large earthquakes in 48 hours around the ring of fire say that a major quake (maybe many times the Aceh/Indonesia one) may be closer than we think.
Are you ready?

Bye bye California...

:D ;) ;)

(Lighten up, it's just a joke.)

The question is 'when?' not 'if?'. 40 million years overdue for a dinosaur/naked ape extinction event. How long will it takes us to have sustainable off world colonies? 10,000 years is a hiccup by astronomical timing. We've been around about 200,000 years. Math would say we have a good chance for humans to survive on other worlds in space. Human nature may say something entirely different.
