Any stories where 3 people fall in love and the 2 friends marry the same woman.

Out of random curiousity: anyone know what countries this is legal in?

Well used to be in America, it is one of those state by state things, Utah for a while said you could, Arizona had a small town full of those families though they have recently been taken apart, though not because they have multiple wife families.

It's also fairly prevalent in the middle east, I'm sure you've heard the stories about sheiks having harems, every woman in those harems usually was married to the sheik. Daughters grew up in the harem, though eventually left the harem and joined someone elses. Harems are still a fact of life there, though generally reserved for the rich.

Personally, I wouldn't mind having a harem of men, I'd get as close as I could if I didn't get really lucky and find myself living with a one man harem, not kidding he can give it to me as much as I want. :D :catroar:

I looked quickly, found no story exactly like this. Even if I missed one, another would definitely be a good thing.

RAH "Moon is a Harsh Mistress" had some marriages related to this idea. Also his later work... ummm... "past through tomorrow?" I think that was the title.

One version was a "chain" marriage where each person could be married to two people and so the "ends" of the chain who were each married to only one person could marry another and so extend the chain.

Another was a group marriage where the entire group would "vote" a new member in.

I seem to remember there were other "topologies" :) but I don't remember the details.

RAH (Robert Anson Heinline (sp?)) is always worth the read.

3 in a relationship

Could 3 people actually get into a marriage.
Wonder is polyandry is legal.

If you could find a church that would marry three people I suppose so. Good luck on that, most everyone except the mormons never liked the idea and the mormons don't anymore. Those sheiks having harems isn't a part of the khoran, it's just something they are used to and expect in the middle east.

My ultimate fantasy, living with my three dream women, but not getting married, because I don't want to be someone's bitch in prison, yo. So would the state interfere if you just lived with three women?

what laws could that break?

Friends

Bigamy is only illegal if you get caught. As the three people in this story agree to the marriage(s) then that shouldn't be a problem.

Otherwise you would have to change religion i'm afraid.

most middle eastern countries, i think some countries around india also do this still, a few countries in south america follow this to an extent.

though in the US you Can Technicly have a legal marrage to 2 diffrent people. it acctualy varries from state to state of how long it will take to reach this loop hole. (common Law marrages are forced onto people who live togeather X number of years (10 years here in missouri)) Now common law marriges are not seen as true marrages in the eyes of Religion, and after the limit you Could Legaly Marry another woman/man Outside this common law marrage, and you Would technicly have 1 Wife (by religion and state) and a second wife (out of common law marrage through continuaed habitulation.) im not sure if they fixed the laws around this but it is one of the funny loop holes you learn in some Law classes.

Yeah Murder is also only illegal if you get caught too...

marraige of 3

This is a hard one, would all 3 share the same bed? then, would it be mfm, or mff? what i like about mfm - hot sex all night long (if the men can share)...what i like about fmf, having my best friend and best girl friend with me 24/7. fun times, with lots of sensual moments....

Legality

But, his point was on legality. Not morality.

True! But in both the US and the UK it doesn't matter what religion you are you can only have one wife, so unless you want to go to Asia the only way to marry two people would be to commit bigamy.

On the other hand, in the Uk if a couple live together as man and wife for two years they are considered to be man and wife, or whatever mix the relationship maybe. So if all three lived together for two year's they would legally be classed as....complicated.

Bigamy is one man having two wives; polyandry is one woman having two husbands.

There are not only legal issues involved, but moral and ethical.

Marriage is in two forms or consideratons; legal involves who owns what and who supports who. (Who gets the farm and kids?) This might best be left to the courts.
The other consideration invloves emotional and perhaps sexual issues. This might be best left to the churches.

The latter might best be termed a legal union.

I am playing with a concept that would involve as nearly as possible a society as we have with the sole exception that instead of two sexes, there would be three.

UL'G has alreadyb written a wonderful novel about a single sexed society.

Actually, polyandry is one female and multiple males. ("poly" meaning many)
And polygamy would be the male counterpart to that.

Nothing, absolutely nothing, is better left to the churches. Look at human history; all that religions do is start wars and persecute people who don't adhere exactly to their dogmas.

People are still having their houses firebombed, and being shot at this year over the difference between transubstantiation and consubstantiation at the Christian communion. (No I won't explain it - go look it up.)

imagine the "illicit" sex at the conference called to debate bigamy....
