Marriages of convenience are more common than marriages of love.

Marriage is what you make it. If you make it cheap, it is. If you make it mean something, it does.

Nothing anyone does in their own marriage makes one fucking bit of difference to me and my marriage. People need to mind their own damn business. Mind your own marriage and don't worry about what other people do with theirs. Maybe divorce rates wouldn't be sky high if people were as concerned with their own marriages as they are with others.

Terrible that it somehow doesn't cheapen the concept of marriage when two heterosexuals marry who are not in love, but when a male homosexual and a female homosexual marry - it does. But heterosexual marriages of convenience, or for money, or family arrangement, or for power, or for insurance, or for citizenship, or for legal status - obviously don't cheapen the incredibly sacred ritual of marriage, do they?

Actually the "sacred ritual" is a much newer concept than "and then I'll have THREE horses if I take your daughter off your hands." That's the irony of it all.

Perception, conformity, and society

Gay rights has to first start with individual rights. A person of either sex has that individual right to make their own choice about who to be with. Gays are no different than straights in that regard.

The narrow minded portion of society that percieves gay marriage as being wrong is based on the perception that if it is not traditional heterosexual marriage it is wrong, thus not in conformity.

All to often we (the masses) allow the government to make and pass laws the would seem to enforce and keep in place this conformity as a measure of security.

Having known both male and females who are gay, I can assure you as a "straight" this whole fear of gay marriage will in the end prove to be unfounded. What does anyone has to fear by letting folks make individual choices?

They fear the "comformity" they so rely on for their own security will falter. Such is the fate of ignorant masses who depend on others to enforce this so called beneficial conformity.

We are all, no matter what your orientation, individuals. Thus entittled to make our own choices. And we should be able to make those choices without fear of bias, denial of rights, and reprisal.

In an ignorant world, a smart person is king. Education may not make you smarter but it changes your point of view.

Well put. I always ask people how gay marriage being legal would change or threaten their own marriage. They either say something cheap like, "It just would." or "You've never been married, so you just can't understand." Or they just quote scripture.

I would add that the reason people are afraid of losing conformity as a guiding force, is that then they would have to think for themselves, make their own choices, heaven forbid, be responsible for their own lives.

Apparently, thinking for oneself is a frightening thing, it is much easier to have someone to blame.

You two pretty much nailed it. True individuality is a scarce thing these days. Most people think it's superficial - how you dress, what you eat, your favorite musical/movie/book genres, etc. That stuff is a small part of who you are, but by no means the main part.

It's pretty scary getting to know the true you on the deepest levels. Combine that with our society's obsession with 'normalcy' and being seen as attractive, and a lot of people either ignore themselves or try to change for stupid reasons. No wonder why the psychology and pharmaceutical fields are thriving!

So very true, sad to think people cannot and will not think for themselves. Truly a nation of the blame others and accept no individual responsibility. And we wonder why we have problems. Any kind of rights should be an easy fix, but the masses are ignorant of the facts, so the minority has no rights. And again that makes it a sad place. Years ago the issue was salvery, segregation, equal oppurtunity, and womens rights. Today the issue of gay rights means just as much as did those issues of the past. Silly world, sad comment on us all.

I have gay friends who have been in relationships for ten years now.
Straight, gay, bi, it doesn't matter. If you love somebody,then so be it.
