Where I work we have to ask if the patron would like to donate $1.00 to the March of Dimes to help save premature babies lives through costly medical expenses. Some old woman with a permanently pinched face said: "The only reason we have premature babies is because the mothers smoke, drink, or do drugs."

I told her that I was a premature baby; that my mother started hemmoraging in the 8th month. She ignored me and said that we should send money to the veterans (her husband was one), and I told her that my mother was a veteran. You should have seen the look on her face. It's like she had taken a bite of the nastiness she had just spewed.

If I hadn't taken my medication that morning, I would've leaped over the counter and throttled her scrawny neck. Are there really so many people that are so misinformed about charity work and the facts based upon the charity's findings or reasons?

I Guess so...

I thought that the money donated to The March of Dimes was spent on research into the causes, prevention, reduction and treatment of birth defects, and awareness programs about preventing them, not actual treatment.

Shows how little I know.

My boss (principal) is one of these 100% people. Everyone will give something. Pisses me off. We get hit for everything, charity wise. It is my money. And some of the charities I do not like, I don't like the cut, the amount they keep to do business. Or I don't like their stance on certain subjects and I do not want to support them at all, not even a bucks worth.

I try to give a little to any charity that needs donations. I can't always and feel sad.
What you give you receive back in other ways. Charity begins with ourselves.
I give freely of my money, hoping that it will help, if I don't have
the money to give then I offer my time.
In New Zealand we are so lucky. Maternity care is free. If you have a premy baby? You don't get presented with a bill. I cannot even imagine how expensive it is in America.

I dont mind giving to charaties, but the ones I hate are those who call on the telephone and can't seem to understand that the $800 a month I'm living on has to support me, my kids and pay all the bills. They start out asking for $50, then just slowly drop it. Meanwhile, I'm looking at a stack of bills and trying to figure out how to buy new shoes for my 4 year old. :(

I do, however, try and find a few dollars to drop into the collection jars when I'm in stores and see them, or into the red kettles around Christmas time.
