An accountant for Paul Manafort told jurors Friday she believed his tax returns contained inaccurate information and falsely reduced his tax liability by classifying millions of dollars she believed was income as loans.

The accountant, Cindy Laporta, said manipulating tax returns in such a way was “inappropriate” and that she knew it was wrong, but did it because Manafort was a longtime client of her firm. “I prepared the tax returns and communicated with banks based on information that [Richard] Gates and Manafort provided to me that I didn’t believe,” said Laporta, who testified under immunity.

This testimony is on top of witnesses who said Manafort had presented false invoices:

Prosecutors then displayed a copy of an invoice on the screen that was different from the others Jacobsen had sent Manafort over the years.

It contained an imprint of his company’s logo but billed for architectural services and listed as the client a company called Global Endeavor, which court records say is tied to Manafort.

“That is not a bill from my company,” he testified, adding that Global Endeavor was never a client nor did his firm provide architectural services.

Katzman provided similar testimony about two invoices he was shown by prosecutors that contained small mistakes in the spelling of Alan Couture’s name and address.

“There are errors again with our company name and zip code,” he said.

The witnesses have also all testified that Manafort paid them with overseas wire transfers, mostly from accounts in Cyprus — accounts that his bookkeeper and accountant testified Thursday they didn't know about.

"The funds used to pay the vendors came directly from the unreported foreign bank accounts where Manafort deposited his foreign consulting income," prosecutors wrote in their Wednesday filing. "Manafort's practice of paying his vendors directly with his offshore funds was designed to hide the underlying income from his bookkeepers and return preparers, and ultimately the IRS."

Phillip Ayliff, Manafort's longtime tax accountant, also testified Thursday and said he too did not know about the foreign accounts, although he said Manafort was provided an outlet to disclose them.

"We asked the question and the response was no," Ayliff said.

Many of the witnesses work for vendors who over the years provided luxury goods and services to the Manafort family, including designer suits, Land Rovers and home improvements.

All said they were paid by Manafort through international wire transfers, a method of payment they agreed was unusual.

Yep, I think he's really screwed because if he gets off the Russians will wipe him out anyway. I'm not feeling any sympathy for him, though.

Rick Rolled! He Gave Him Up! He Let Him Down!

Wonkers, shit got REAL in the Manafort trial yesterday! With only an afternoon session to work with, Judge Ellis got in a full-day's-worth of crazy by flogging the lawyers to GO!GO!GO!

And go they did! Rick Gates copped to all the crimes, Manafort stared daggers, the IRS lady taxsplained how you really, really do have to disclose your overseas accounts, and Judge Ellis shouted that the attorneys need to RESPECT HIS AUTHORITAH!

It was nuts!

After Gates confessed all his sins, he began laying out the details of Manafort's work in Ukraine and the circuitous route his money took to bypass Uncle Sam on the way home. This guy has many, many unpleasant hours of testimony in front of him -- the attorneys have agreed that marital infidelity may be introduced as evidence of bad character. But yesterday he got a nice break when Judge Ellis lost his shit at the prosecutors for trying to introduce Gates's passport to document he traveled to Ukraine. Ellis is wary of portraying Manafort as guilty by association with Russian mobsters -- either to avoid reversible error or just out of his own inherent cussedness. He's also racing through the trial like man renting his robes by the hour.

FUN TIMES! Can't wait for this afternoon (or possibly tomorrow morning) when Downing gets to kick the crap out of Gates on cross examination. Will Gates admit he's the real devious mastermind behind his boss's scamming and scheming? Will he convince the jurors that Paul Manafort is an innocent waif, whose only crime was being too trusting? Will Judge Ellis catch the prosecutors rolling their eyes and leap over the bench to beat them into submission with his gavel?

DUNNO! But we'll keep you posted!

:D :) :D

One thing is for sure, the prosecution has plenty of reasons to file an appeal if they don't get the conviction. The may even be able to get a new trial out of all this.

Can prosecutions file appeals in such cases? This came up on an MSNBC discussion last night and the advice was that the prosecution couldn't appeal.

If they can make a case for bias from the bench, they may be able to get a new trial, but they would have a lot of work to do to get there with a stacked bench all the way up to the Scrotes.

Remember the Governor and his squeeze that got caught raiding the cookie jar and the Scrotes cleared him? The Scrotes are very clearly in favor of allowing white collar executive favors.
