Don't worry this is not a thread about me being pissed off at anybody here!!

Today I went to a big supermarked here in town, and to my big surprise I noticed that they had already started to sell different stuff for christmas decorations and stuff like that!!

For crying out loud we are still in the middle of October!

Is it just me or do christmas start earlier and earlier each year??

dood, i totally agree, every year we outdo ourselves in proving which country above all others takes the cake in capitalist pig game. we fall all over each other, scramble, all fall and winter to prove to our loved ones that we really do love them-and we show it with money.

because i don't know about the rest of you, but when my man bought me a car, i knew i was in love, with the car :) no,... i'm just kidding, i don't see why we look at it that way (consciously or subconsciously)except that we've done it all our lives.

let's rebel- let's give our families intellectual and homemade gifts (like a coupon for something they reallylike to do- a minight picninc or a ferry ride, a homemade frame with a picture of you with them etc.)let's see if we don't start a trend, eh?

Actually there is a reason stores start displaying Christmas items almost three months early, to help those who get paid only once a month spread out their buying season. At my last job I was paid monthly and while it was easy to pay bills, since most of the major ones came at the first of the month, you had to be a miser for fear some unexpected expense didn't occur and wipe you out. By starting Christmas early, those people can lesiurely buy wrapping paper, bows, Christmas cards, new ornaments and all the the little things that make the holiday special without obsessing over it. But I must agree it is annoying to see Christmas trees in stores in mid October. And if I hear one carol before Thanksgiving I will strangle someone!

Believe it or not, a lot of people are already upset with my store because we have a very small Christmas shop set up. We will do our big set up in a few weeks, but I am surprised at how many people think we should have the store totally set for Christmas already. I just want it to be over, the holidays suck for me & if I could sleep through the next 3 months, I would do it in an instant.

Yeah. I'm sure that retailers push Christmas shopping in October to be helpful. <laughs wryly>

Actually, there used to be something of an unwritten rule about not promoting Christmas until after Halloween. Now, of course, you see Halloween stuff on the shelves in late July and if you live in a metropolitan area, you'll be hard-pressed not to find someone who keeps Christmas stuff up all year long.

Oh, well. Somebody pass me a Tom & Jerry, willya?

Helpful, not really. A matter of big bucks, hell yes. It is all about money & the earlier people start to shop, the more they tend to spend. Business is business & Christmas is very big business. I am glad I am out of retail,the psycho freaks are out in force by Thanksgiving.

Me too...

19 years ago I used to work in a store that sold Xmas decorations wholesale.Importing stock from all over the world.

Xmas started at the end of JUNE and finished at the end of JANUARY it killed the Xmas spirit in me.

It is just another commercial enterprise to me now.

Some people blame the capitalists- I blame the Christians.
Okay, it seems a few of you are angry because they have a Christmas display up. It's not like this is public property here. No one is forcing you to buy anything and, yes, a great deal of Christmas shoppers start early.
It's their space so get over it.

Oh, and before anyone tells me about the true meaning of Christmas and twisting a holiday for your own gain remember that Winter Solstice BS those witches are always going on about that time of year. At least the 'capitalists' aren't burning anyone afterward.

Oh and lala, homemade gifts and coupons? I have only one thing to say: If I don't get a Pony, I want a Shotgun!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ :cool: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
All I want out of life is to get from A to B and maybe do a little shopping and I come to find out my life is ruled by bloody, buggery pieces of paper!
I worked retail for nearly 6 years,,, and yeppers, it does seem (hell, I know it's a fact ) that the stores are displaying Christmas earlier each year. AND it has nothing to do with being nice or considerate to the folks with off beat pay periods or restricted incomes. IT does have to do with impluse buying and jacking up the bottom line for the end of the year. Some major retailers ( Wal-Mart for sure ) know that nearly 26% - 28% of their ANNUAL PROFIT comes from Christmas sales,,, and since Christmas sales are nearly 75% impluse, they want to gather in more profits,,, it's just that simple.
Now, I love Christmas as much or more than anyone I know,,, The way I defeat the monster blahs of seeing Christmas mass displayed too early, is to shop all year with the idea in mind that "hey, this would make a great gift",,, no, I don't make special trips normally to do Christmas shopping in May or September even,,, just as I'm out and about all year I keep it tucked in the back of my mind is all. Then one weekend in late October or early November I'll hit several places to finalize the gift list and be done. This way I can spend more time on decorating and cooking,,, this way I can also listen to the music of my choice while working around my home,,, as opposed to 101 versions of Rudolf the red nosed reindeer.
Oh I'm with you on that one Ezzy, I also worked in a store, starting all that shit in June.
I haven't had a normal chrimas ever since. To me it has unfortunately become something like this...let's eat...give the kids the presents......and let's go home so I can get some sleep.....
Oh and Shyguy. Xmas started last month here on Devils Isle.
Please forgive me ShyGuy, and the rest of you.
I have worked retail 20 years now. And, well. In the current shop we have had Christmas up since June. Want to know why? We got tired of people asking when it was going to start coming in. People have been buying it ever since we started receiving it from the vendors. I am sorry, but its a case of supply and demand.
But I cannot stand it!!! I am already sick of Christmas and its only October. No Christmas carols on the speakers though. Not allowed as we have to many religions working there. Yeah... At least that part is okay.
If we, and other retailers, couldn't sell it early, it wouldn't be there.
I LOVE christmas decorations...I got a fake tree just so I could put it up earlier and take it down later...I once left it up until February because it was sooooo pretty. I love the whole feeling of Christmas time...the actual holiday I could live without but the decorated stores and the smells of the season.(regardless of the month)...cookies & pies baking...fresh cut trees...hot cider...these things make me serenly happy. Most people run around like chickens with their heads cut off this time of year...not me...I slow down and enjoy all the wonderful visual treats.
As usual last year Christmas shopping started Christmas Eve. All the store assistants looking harrassed, handling the last minute shoppers and setting the displays up for the Boxing Day sales start. The credit card computers had gone down (overload, the millenium bug, whatever). So they were processing all the sales by hand. End result, nothing I bought that day has ever showed up on a credit card bill.
So shoppers of the world unite, and in one rush besiege the stores Christmas Eve. They'll never know what hit 'em.
Please don't shoot me. In addition to doing my Christmas shopping all year long and being done way before Christmas, I have a few Christmas decorations that I keep out all year long. I have a stained glass Santa Clause nightlight, among other things. I also shop at Christmas store specialty shops that are open all year long. I like Christmas, what can I say? I try to keep the Christmas spirit alive 365 days each year.
