Me and my woman are havin our last child and she is planning to have a tubal ligation.
I was wondering if someone that has had the male vasectomy could give me some advice on it.

I was given some paperwork on it at the Dr.'s office the last visit.

I think i would rather go with me having the sergery than her, since the Dr. said the best time for her to have the sergery was after giving birth.

Just for fun i made a poll.

Tubal Ligation or Vasectomy?

Vasectomy is a 30 minute procedure performed in the physician's office while tubal ligation is performed in a hospital usually in a day surgery unit.
Vasectomy requires two small incisions in the scrotum performed under local anesthetic; tubal ligation involves a small abdominal incision usually performed under general anesthesia-- although local anesthetic is sometimes an option.
The tubes that carry sperm (vas deferens) are severed and sealed using either sutures or surgical clips on the end of each of the vas deferens in vasectomy; pregnancy is prevented in tubal ligation by one of several methods that usually involve cutting the fallopian tubes and then sealing them or clipping them so that sperm and egg will be unable to meet.
Recovery from vasectomy usually requires only that the patient refrain from heavy physical activity for approximately 48 hours; tubal ligation requires that women limit heavy lifting for at least one week following surgery.
Complications from vasectomy are relatively rare but can involve bleeding and infection, swelling of the scrotum, as well as the possibility of sperm granulomas (small, inflamed hard nodules at the end of the severed tube)--these usually heal on their own, however in some cases additional surgery may be required. Potential complications from tubal ligation include a slight risk of bleeding and infection.
The failure rate for vasectomy is about 1%, while the failure rate for tubal ligation is slightly higher at about 2%.

Hope this helps

*added: because I forgot it last time

basicaly.. it's "easier" for a man.. ;)

I had a tubal...if i had to do it again.. i wouldn't..

SO had a vasectomy.. he said there was nothing to it.. very simple procedure

That is basically what the info said that i got from the Dr.
I'm hopeing someone has had the male procedure to give me an idea how it went for him.
Thanks freakygurl32 for your reply though!
:)

Yep had it done 3 1/2 years ago.

In my opinion it should be the guy who gets the chop. For a male it is a short, almost painless procedure. Mine took half an hour from dropping my pants to the final cup of coffee they gave me before I left. I walked home from the surgery, and went to work next day. My nuts grew to the size of small oranges, and turned a peculiar shade of dark purple but the discomfort and pain were minimal.

For a woman, it is a major invasive process involving general anaesthetic, and a long hospital stay. More pain, bigger scar, more risk.

Save her from the decision and volunteer. The worst part of the procedure is the injections in the scrotum, the best part is getting through the required number of ejaculatuions needed before you get tested after the op.

Just another woman...

30 ejaculations after the vasectomy, a man gets a sperm count to know that it is effective. A woman doesn't know if it is effective until she doesn't get pregnant.

The 30 were very fun.

I'm an OB nurse

I've been through the female procedure

Trust me..

be a man have it done..

she's doing enough by having that baby ;)

Actually.. it is far easier for a man.. less discomfort (yes there is some but not anymore than you can handle).. less chance of complications (tubal is a major surgery) Vasectomy isn't.. It's cheaper.. and it's also covered by most insurances.. where tubals are not (you might want to check with your insurance company). If you are paying for it yourself, vasectomy is cheaper..

*before anyone gets mad.. the above line be a man have it done.. was a joke. If it offends you.. get a sense of humor :)

Was the injections painfull or just uncomfratable(sp)?

I had my tubal done just 8 weeks ago today. I didn't find it to be that hard at all afterwards. I was released from the hospital the next day, along with lil Gillian. I had mild discomfort overall, but I had also just given birth. A motrin 800 took care of the pain. I had no infections, no bleeding, the scar is barely even visible now. In my case, my doctor severed my fillopian tubes. Pregnancy is not gonna happen unless sperm can magiclly transport themselves.

My husband was going to get the snip job done, ON TOP of me getting the tubal, but we found out his insurance doesn't cover it, and so long as I had it done (for free, thanks to insurance), then for now, we won't worry about him getting his done.

Now, as a side refrence, I can't help but ask about the title... Male Vesectomy... as opposed to a female one?

I won't lie... they hurt like fuck. I'd rather get my dick tattooed (now there's an idea!), than have it done again. But the pain is gone in a few seconds then all you have is the dull ache after the drugs wear off. This can be taken care of with aspirin.

Do it man... it's easy for you... hard for her.

I would describe the procedure as "extreme discomfort." Yes, the shot hurt, and it was uncomfortable for a couple of days. My balls hurt like a motherfucker and swelled up to the size of a pair of BB's.

I just asked my SO about this and he said you forgot to hold a bag of fozen peas on them for a few hours when you got home :)

My SO had the snip 7 years ago and had no trouble at all. He had it on the Friday because he does heavy lifting at work and then went back to work on the Monday.

His view was I had done enough work giving birth to two kids and years of being on the pill so it was his turn to play in the birth control factor :)

Our family ate loads of frozen peas and mixed veges that week... I still can't walk past the frozen produce section in the supermarket without cringing.:D

if you're male..i say...hell yeah....go with the male vasectomy...i've heard stories 'bout men having those female vasectomies....<wincing>....

I had a vasectomy about 17 years ago, it was fine - Good valium before hand, watch them work if you feel like it, rest and go home to a nice icepack.

Here's a bit of info too - I had it reversed about 6 years ago - wasn't supposed to have much chance of renewed fertility but we have a great little three year old.

My advice - get the cut - the procedure your wife/girlfriend is far more difficult.

P.S. that is a very pretty clitoris Ginny, you should be proud!.

I have to go with kiwi on this, it do hurt. But it hurts worst the second time. I had to have it done twice. But the bit of pain I went through was less then she would have experienced doing a tubal.
One warning, don't have sex until the doc say's you can. He told me 6 weeks, but being the macho, brainless fuck I am, I wanted it after 2 weeks. When I had my orgasm it hurt so bad I was groaning, unable to speak and thrashing about, trying to get away from my wife. She though she had hit on something. She figured I was really turned on so she held me tight with her legs and persisted in moving her hips. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry it hurt so damned bad. After the pain subsided to a point where I could tell her what had happened, the damned woman almost fell out of bed laughing! "Serves you right, turkey! The doc told you not to." Was her comment. That was 18 years ago. So please do as the doc tells you!

Had mine in 1963. The doc. Rubed novocain into the bag befor he gave me the shots, no pain. Wached him open me up and cut a small ( about a sixteenth inch ) section out of each vas. Sewed me up.

The worst part was watching him drool while he worked.

Used ice bag for a day. No sex for five days, then used condom for three weeks. ( except for blow jobs.)

Into Dr's office, jacked off into sample bottle. He checked for live ones, none found. That was it.

Pain was very little, but Dr. did use topical anaesthesia before injections. I also used ice packs for twelve hours.

Anybody know the approx. price range of a vasectomy??? If I get a tubal it'll be free...due to insurance...we would have to pay for him to get a vasectomy though.

Got mine done in 1972. I won't try to tell anyone it wasn't uncomfortable to painful. Had it done on Friday afternoon, used the weekend to recover.

Had some scrotal bruising and minor swelling. I was sore for a few days but by Monday I was pretty well back to normal. Just walked a bit gingerly.

Nerve regretted it. Definitely takes the worry out of being close! :D

As to cost, I think I paid $150 but that was 30 years ago. Inflation plus the questionable accuracy of memory on a one-time payment should tell you to take that figure with a grain (or two) of salt.

And the second one was free 'cause the doc didn't like the sperm count after the first one.

But all that said, it's still a safer and simpler procedure for him than for her. And the technology has advanced to the point where the likelihood of reversal is very high.

its been updated.A recent advancement in the vasectomy technique is the "No-Scalpel" vasectomy. In a conventional vasectomy, the physician may make one or two small incisions with a scalpel, and then use sutures or stitiches to close them at the end of the procedure. In the "No-Scalpel" method, rather than making an incision, the doctor makes only one tiny puncture into the skin with a special instrument. This instrument is used to gently stretch the skin opening so that the tubes can be reached easily.

The tubes are then blocked, using the same method as a conventional vasectomy, but because no incision was made, there is very little bleeding and no stitches are needed to close the tiny opening. The opening will heal quickly with little or no scarring.

The technique of the No-Scalpel vasectomy was developed in 1974 by a Chinese physician, Dr. Li Shunqiang, and has been performed on over 8 million men in China. No-Scalpel vasectomy was introduced to the United States in 1988 and is now used by many doctors in the U.S. and elsewhere.

Compared to the traditional incisional technique, the "No-Scalpel" vasectomy usually takes less time, causes less discomfort, and may have lower rates of bleeding and infection. Recovery following the "No-Scalpel" procedure is usually complete in three to five days.

The vasectomy only divides the vas and has no effect on sperm that are already beyond that point. It is important not to have unprotected intercourse until the absence of sperm from the ejaculate has been confirmed with two negative sperm checks 4 to 6 weeks apart.

Overall, vasectomy is a simple and safe form of birth control which is often preferable to birth control pills, a tubal ligation, diaphragms, or spermicides. Some men say that without the worry of accidental pregnancy and the bother of other birth control methods, sex is more relaxed and enjoyable than before.

I had mine done in 1980, really no problems at all, other than some discomfort for a couple of days. The ex had just given birth and we were told that it was better for her to continue to have her periods. No effects on me other than my balls now are much bigger than they were then. I suppose that's a plus. And knowing that I'll never have to worry about getting anyone else pregnant is a good thing also.
