Some suggestions
I started out using a battery operated trimmer but this method got kinda annoying because of the hair catching in the machine. I currently use a mach3 razor. I find this method easy, fast, simple and smooth. If this is your first time exercise extreme caution and if you get a reash or something lay off this method. Happy shaving and I reiterate PLEASE be carefull down there.

How short do you want it?
I trim mine like I trim my arm pit hair, to about a centimeter in length.
Just be thankful your pubic hair doesn't start at your ankles. If it does, I suggest you get a professional hair trimmer like I did (to use from your feet up).

If you want to shave completely, its relatively easy !
The first time, make sure you trim the hair down as short as you can. Its really easy to do, just comb through your hair, but keep the comb flat agains the skin making sure to keep a bundle of hair in it. Then use your scissors to trim down to the level of the comb.
That gets the hair down to about a quarter inch, and makes sure you dont nick the skin !
Now I dare say you are worried about nicking some of that chicken skin ! Dont be ! It works out !
Sit in a hot bath for a while, read a book or something !
Have a brand new Mach 3 Turbo ready, and your fav shaving gel... for me, King of Shaves Menthol works best !
After at least a 10 min soak, sit on the side of the tub, and massage the gel across your nuts.... then rinse your hands off... you dont want gel on your hands when you are using a razor !
Then stretching the skin in exactly the same way as you do on your face, shave in exactly the same way !
If your nuts get in the way, move em, they arent cast in stone... work from as far back as you are comfortable reaching, and come forward. Then do it again in the opposite direction.... If you are going for the complete "sac" shave, make sure you get around the top of your penis too, otherwise it becomes a bit like a scrubbing brush !
This works for me, and only needs maintenance about once a week ! I've been completely nut shaved, and pubie trimmed for about 9 months now, and I dont think I will ever go back to being totally hairy..... This is way too intense a feeling for that !
