Addendum: FYI: MS has done a PA (Prince Albert piercing, the one that pierces into the underside of a cockhead behind the ridge and comes out the tip) on himself twice now and ended up removing them both. MS has done a bunch of them on himself, on me (ahem, no scrotal piercings on me, of course), and on various and sundry others. He's good and no one, to my knowledge, has ever had any trouble at all with one of his piercings. I'm sure he'd do yours if you lived nearby - which you don't.

Call piercing shops in your area. Ask them right out if their peircer has a LOT of experience with scrotal piercings (or whatever kind you're interested in).

Ask them what gague they will use (should be 14 or 12 for a piercing newbie) and what they would recommend for that area, CBR (captive ball ring) or barbell.

Ask them to tell you about their aftercare instructions. You shouldn't have to buy anything from them for your piercing aftercare. If you do, they may be more interested in selling you aftercare stuff than in piercing you properly.

Ask to see their autoclave. Ask if they sterilize and reuse needles or use a new one for every pierce.

If you don't feel comfy there, leave.

Regular pierced earrings, like mostly everyone who goes to the mall to have them pierced gets are about 18 gauge.

So...
14 gauge = thicker earring than "regular" earrings (NOT talking diameter of the ring itself)
12 gauge = thicker than 14 gauge
10 gauge = thicker than 12 gauge

His are mostly 12 and 14 gauge; mine are all 14 gauge.
Besides three "regular" piercings in my earlobes (two on the left, one on the right), i have a 14 gauge in my left cartilege (up high). I'm going to have it stretched to a 12 gauge pretty soon though.

CBR vs barbell = your personal choice. If the diameter (not gauge) of the CBR is too large, though, it might get caught on your pants/in your zipper/pulled when you sit before you get used to it. Be aware of that. That kind of pulling happens less with barbells, so i've heard from MS, than with rings. However, start with a ring if you like the way they look. After it's healed up, you can sub anything in and out of there.

MS does not use a piercing gun at all. Never has. I don't know of any reputable piercer who does. Guns are for those mall earring piercers. Every piercer i know of uses special piercing needles that are *very* sharp and have one hollow end. That hollow end is so when the needle is through your skin and is sticking out the other side, the end of the ring (or bar) can fit into the hollow and, as the needle is drawn through the new pierce, the ring (or bar) slides in to take it's place. No guns.

MS is moving to northern CA in a few weeks. Oddly enough, that's when i will be moving there, too. Better hurry...

From my, admittedly inexperienced reasoning I would have a bit more gap to playwith as such with a ring. That and I hate the way barbells look.

I already knew how the needles worked in that regard... Just like sewing up a spud bag!

Some of my possible flights do stop at SF.... hmmm drop in, catch a 'niners game, and get my balls burst, I mean scrotum pierced!
