A few friends and myself, both male and female, were talking this weekend about the struggle to stay above water financially where we live, and how the real estate prices are ridiculous, etc, etc. We are all college educated and have lived other places than our current location, and for one reason or another have come back home. In our mid-20s no one wants to live with Mom&Dad, so we all work two or three jobs and sacrifice some social aspects to live here. Anyways, to make a long story short a night of drinks and dinner turned into a discussion of how to get ahead. The drunker we got the more outrageous our get rich schemes became. I made the comment that we should start making amatuer porno movies. It was brushed off at first, but it caught a little bit of steam and caused a very interesting conversation.
The next day I recieved a call from one female friend and one male friend, who having a bit of physical chemistry and a shared curiosity for being the center of attention( aka in front of the camera). I have no direct background in making a movie but with all of the technology and with a good computer I figure that editing and directing something can't be too hard. At the very least it could be a wonderful personal experience, at the most it could actually turn into something profitable. Both participants are attractive and young. Very frat guy/soriority girl next door. We've yet to discuss the actuals of everything, but it looks as though in the next few weeks were going to give the movie making a try....
So my question is, has anyone attempted to make a movie for purposes other than just personal enjoyment? I'm interested in the financial, emotional, literal workings of it all. What sort of investment would be needed? I'm also interested in the participants, the "talent". I'd love to hear from anyone who has a comment or a suggestion. Who knows? You could end up being part of a fledling porn monopoly....Thanks.

check the laws in your area. every adult film production company owner has been in jail at one time or another... and just directing a film can be a crime in some areas.

personally i LOVE amateur adult films but please be careful in how you go about this. check the law and get a good lawyer. other than that, it's just like any other business... paperwork, business plan, insurance, etc.

Yeah, you really can't just make it, put it up online, and sell it. You have to register as an official business, see if you can make it in your own home (are you zoned residential only?), plus a million other things (like EJ said).

Heh, and good luck with recruiting people...I kinda doubt thats gonna happen (at least from online).

Ya know, my hubby and I have joked that this could be his retirement career. The production aspect, at least.

more seriously: i would never have thought that there were laws against it, to be honest. is that just zoning boards being skeeved out by p40n?

If we get this off the ground, I'll have my people call your people. ;)

Possibly. We live far enough from town that there aren't any zoning ordinances, and I'm hoping that things stay that way. Though with recent development in the area, I'm not optimistic.

sorry for being off topic... just had to say I really dig the "friends" quote in your sig, eilan. are you the poster that I've also seen use "simpsons" quotes in the past? I heard a good one tonight, tho now that I've decided to try to quote it I'm not sure I remember exactly how it goes.... I think it was, "I'm not a missionary. I don't even believe in jebus." spoken by homer j., of course. :D

Why, thank you. :)

I've been known to use Simpsons quotes from time to time. I also had an av with Homer Simpson's ass in it.

If the real estate is high, get a real estate licenseand sell real estate,Thats one of the ventures I am involved in and it is very financially rewarding. We buy and sell real estate in Atlanta, and dabble in condo flipping in Destin Fla.

Hi Mr. JiggyFly,

Have you checked out Seymore Butts site? My BF and I were also talking about how you could make money out of producing adult movies and found this info on SB's site. Might be more ambitious than what you are talking about but what the heck! Have fun and let me (us) know when you've released your first movie :D

Look at the law; tie down all the loose ends especially their current photo ID to match the new 2257 law.

For financing it depends on what you are looking to set up, a small studio setup and good quality cameras, lights, set dressing props, editing studio.

A lot of that can now be covered with a really good computer and professional editing software, don't forget to build your own DVD writer tower, you should be able to build a ten times tower for around $1,500.

You are most likely better off looking for an investor loan instead of freaking out the local bank manager.

$10,000 would be a start, and you shouldn't need more than around $100,000 for a fully professional setup.

don't forget distribution.

assuming you find a legal location/method for production, get financing and participants, you still have to sell the stuff. that means forming relationships with video stores, creating a web presence and/or catalogue and drawing people in to buy/rent.

i wish you the best of luck, but you have to realize that 99% of those endeavoring to do this don't see it to fruition. i don't mean to sound like a negative voice but i just feel you should be prepared for adversity.
