If the majority of posters here would refrain from panicky remarks, we could have a sensible discussion instead. I personally enjoy commentaries by John Cassidy a lot; he writes for The New Yorker. His latest article asks the question "Is a Trump-led coup to stay in power going on?" And he supplied an answer as well, given by a political scientist from Dartmouth: It is not a coup, but rather an erosion of democracy. And then he went on to say:
Democratic erosion isn’t something to be minimized or taken lightly. It refers to the gradual undermining of democratic norms and democratic institutions, which ultimately can prove fatal to democracy.
The way I see it, the exact same can be said about the whole Trump presidency. IMHO the country can consider itself very lucky for Trump being a person of such massive incompetency. If this fellow had possessed the diction and the intelligence of someone older than a fourth-grader, America would be in really deep shit now.
Not that the shit it is in can be ignored. For a country that had been an example for the whole world for a short while, say from the mid 1930s until the mid 1960s, and in many ways even 20 years longer, the deterioration that could be witnessed from the outside, since about Ronald Reagan and the Federalist Society beginning its coup on the Judiciary, has been nothing short of alarming.
With a dangerous clown ascending to the Presidency turning out the icing on the cake.
Unfortunately the mindsets of at least 70 million Americans have been affected also. And political norms and habits. Including more than 50 US Senators having turned into largely spineless puppets. And many government officials turning into criminals.
Re-Building all that into something resembling a democracy, will be a terribly difficult job. Quite possibly one that is impossible to carry out. Now after Ruppert Murdoch and Roger Ailes have done their horrible job leading to the poisoning of the minds of too many Americans.
My country is one that had been afflicted with the MAGA virus also, except it had a slightly different name then. And for us to get cured of it, we had to get the shit beaten out of us, by three or more enemies more powerful than us. With the country getting almost totally devastated after WW2.
I sincerely hope that the cure for the US of A will turn out a lot less drastic. But if not: China is waiting in the wings. In the end it is always societies rotting from the inside, which lose out to others less rotten.
