Roger got the promotion. The text came late in the afternoon, and I was thrilled. It was a huge change for the better for us. Not only did it mean a big bump financially, but it put him on track to be the youngest partner in the firm's history. We wouldnt just be little people anymore. To celebrate, I decided to indulge him in one of his favorite fantasies. That old 50s bit about meeting your man with nothing on but a smile and a fresh drink.
Of course, I would wear heels, and the pearl choker he bought me. My hair up, so I was exposed as possible. Then he texted. The partners were taking him out to celebrate, naturally. I would wait. I sat on the couch, turned on the TV....
It was dark when I woke up. That sound. His key in the door. I was up in a heartbeat. There was no time to make him a drink, but at least I could meet him at the door.
I heard the sound of drunken laughter as I hurried into the front hall, and maybe I should have realized, but I was half asleep and wanted to surprise my husband. As the front door opened, I put on my best smile for him... and the other partners.
They all stood, staring at me, and I stared back.
"Mrs Campbell, I assume?" said the greyest of the elderly men with a jovial grin and a lewd twinkle in his eye as he looked me over. He stepped forward, extending his hand. "What a pleasure to finally meet you in person. John Milton Coldfield Harrison the third. You can call me Jack."
I looked at Roger, my eyes wide, and then at the old man.
"N nice to m meet you, Mister H... uh... Jack. C call me, um, Angela," I stammered.
