Dan Walmsley looked out of the living room of his Surrey mansion across the patio to the gardens where a hundred or so guests were enjoying themselves, partying the night away. He'd left for a few minutes to find some peace and quiet in order take an important phone call from the States.
Even though the party was in his honour, Dan had never really been able to switch off from work. It had been both a blessing and a curse, helping him build up a highly successful sports management agency but seeing him divorced and separated from his children by the time he was forty.
The divorce had come as shock, Dan really hadn't seen it coming but, in his heart of hearts, he knew that while his family had lacked for nothing he hadn't paid them the attention they'd deserved. In some ways he'd been fortunate though, Clara, his ex wife had remained friends and in a way it had strengthened the relationship he had with his two sons, Simon and Grant. In fact they were all there that night to help Dan celebrate his birthday.
With the call completed Dan walked down to the marquee where most of the guests were either chatting or dancing to the DJ. He looked for Elise and spotted her in a group on the dancefloor. The cosmos had given him a second chance and it had come wrapped in an exquisite package. He watched his new wife dancing, the smile on her face as wide as the cheshire cat's.
They'd met nine years ago. She'd been in PR for one of the F1 teams in which Dan's company represented a driver. Dan had VIP tickets for the race and was a bit of a fan of anything to do with cars but he'd been captivated by her from the moment they'd met. She was much younger than him, almost fifteen years to be precise, but he'd known that if he didn't ask for her number he'd regret it and to his surprise she'd given it to him. It had taken Dan a year to woo Elise and not everyone was happy with the age gap between them, but when he'd proposed to her, to his utter joy she'd said yes.
Now, nine years later, here they were. Still together and celebrating Dan's fiftieth birthday.
