Make 'em wait or all at once?

When posting a lenghty non-erotic story would it be better to:

  • Post the chapters as they're written

    Votes: 8 28.6%
  • Split into chapters, but wait and post them all at once

    Votes: 8 28.6%
  • Wait and post it all as one story

    Votes: 9 32.1%
  • It's non-erotic, who gives a fuck?

    Votes: 3 10.7%

  • Total voters

I love a good excuse for a poll. This one is even literary. Amazing.

I was, dammit! This new skin puts up the thread before it takes you to the page to create your poll. Evil bastards!

Now vote! :D

Ain't it great to be the first to vote? :D

AAAAARRRGGHHH!!!!!

How the fuck does one go about fixing a typo in a poll?

Dohi! (don't ask, Lucky will get that....;))

Splitting into chapters aside, I've decided never to post an unfinished story. Just me. I think it creates bad karma for me and limits my ability to edit.

Voted. It's secret.

Also going to mention Charley's AV. (Jaw hits floor and I'm madly babbling)

Hahaha! That poll's not looking very decisive, Min. Awww! :rose:

I voted to post 'em as you write 'em. Make the buggers wait, delayed gratification and all that.

Ditto, because of what cantdog said.... I've gotten started on series and then run out of steam to finish them. It makes people mighty annoyed, I can tell you.

She's bloody gorgeous, ain't she!?!!!

And, quite, on the jaw thing. I LOVE that wickedly beautiful smile.

I know! This is less than helpful. :D I can console myself with the thought that at least I'm not asking for me....

As to the beautiful AV Charley is sporting, there's no question that it's jaw dropping. :p

Only jaw dropping... ? Oh well, takes all sorts ;)

I'd get it finished, split into chapters and post all at once.

Having said that, I may do exactly the opposite soon.

By the way, there's a spelling mistake...

I'll add an option ;) Finish it, for the reasons Cantdog and Carson mentioned. I think it's really better that way.

Then post it one chapter at a time. Keep 'em waiting and eager, and don't flood them with too big a work at once.

As I asked before....how the fuck does one edit typos out of a poll? Anyone? Grrrrr. It's just sitting there....grinning....mocking me.....

Min, I will be less lazy now and give some reasoning behind my vote...

I have found (and heard) that the thing, as whole, once it's all finally posted, gets more reads and feedback, if each chapter is posted individually, with a gap of about a week inbetween each one.

Each chapter hits the new list at intervals and garners more reads, not only for that chapter, but for the earlier ones, too.

Hope that was a touch more helpful than my initial post. :D

I meant to say post about 2 a week. But I just woke up, so I forgot.

I chose "Wait and post it all as one story" because the "correct" option isn't there.

I storongly feel that posting an incomplete story a piece at a time leaves your readers vulnerable to a frustrating attack of writers block or loss of interest by the author. It also lacks the author into situations, characterizations and plot devices that might create the writers block or loss of interest -- it's mush easier to fix continuity and plot problems if your audience hasn't already read the wrong version of where story needs fixed.

However, I also don't think a novel length, non-erotic story will get the exposure it needs if it's posted all at once in a single piece. I favor a serialization approach that keeps the story on the New stories list for as long as possible to attract as many readers as possible.

Write the whole thing, break it into chapters -- with due consideration of cliff-hanger possibilites to build suspense and anticipation for the next chapter -- and post the chapters on a weekly or twice weekly schedule to dangle the title in front of potential readers on the New Stories List for as long as possible.

How you post it is up to the author, but personally I'd opt to post one chapter at a time. The most important part is to finish the whole damned story first. If you develop any kind of following for the story, it would be cruel and insensitive to your readers to leave it unfinished.

Normally, I don't worry too much about what readers think about what I write, but if you're going to serialize something, then you're obligated to them to at least finish it. Whether they like how it ends is another matter entirely.

I didn't vote as this option to finish the story first and then post chapters individually is not an option.

I say finish the work first. Then chop it up into reasonable pieces as chapters and post it that way. I'd toss a chapter out about a week at a time, or so.

Readers can be very moody when they get into something that is supposed to be a continuation. Circumstances arise and the posting takes a while... They get irritated, etc. and the pressure of their need for more becomes a hindrance to the writer.

My $0.02 for free.
