make a life altering decision

Normally, I'd say totally ask about the raise, but I'm not exactly sure now is a good time to do something like that, especially right after you were offered the job. The job market's really just started unfreezing here in the last couple months and that's a lower unemployment rate than NYC. On top of that, a lot of print media places are pretty budget crunched, anyway. I've worked for a print media organization in the past year and subscriptions have been beaten down pretty badly. I'd at least advise looking into the organization as much as possible and see if you can find out if they can likely afford it first.

Now, if this were next year, I'd probably say go for it. The economy could very well be approaching a normal situation by then and the balance of power will be shifting back toward the employees.

You know, Fin, this reply really surprised me, seeing as it's coming from you. Not that it's offensive, or non-articulate, or anything. I can see the point you're making very well, it's just surprising that you said it. I had no idea that you're a cautious soul!

That said, Suga, congratulations! I know that I had two similar opportunity and I didn't take one of them. While I do not regret it at all (it has led me on this path), I sometimes wonder. You're at that age where you can afford to take on these risks. Go for it.

On the housing front - try looking into other boroughs? Manhattan is expensive - how about living in Queens or Brooklyn? Or even in New Jersey as Silverwhisper suggested? You can probably save a sweet bundle, and with the excellent transportation, still enjoy the life in NYC?

I'm always cautious and I always try to see every issue from every angle I can. People just get a lot more emotional when you throw sex into the equation. When we get to issues like potential cheating, it seems like dump them and divorce their ass is the only answer a lot of people are willing to accept. There's just no room for examining the underlying issues and finding a reasonable compromise to prevent cheating in the future.

What if we applied it to the job situation, though? Would most people say that if you call up this firm in NYC and they say they can't afford to give such a huge raise at this time, that you should call the manager a greedy motherfucker and slam the phone down? :D

I even advocate caution when it comes to things like drugs. I don't personally think people should be getting high or drunk. I also realize there's no way to eliminate it. That's why I think maybe they should legalize marijuana. Sure, it's not a great thing, but it's a lot less harmful than a lot of other options like heroin or meth. If you ban everything that people can get drunk or high on, some of them will use anything they can get their hands on and they'll probably overdo it because they'll probably want to get rid of all of it so no one will find it.

Of course, it's not just this forum. It doesn't matter where someone's from, either. If I talk about sex, I'm an extremist, a slut, a rapist, a homo, a pedophile, a cheater, or whatever people decide they're going to call me. If the topic isn't sexual, I'm a voice of reason. :D

Wow, you guys are all amazing. You have given me a lot of great advice both in this thread and through PMs. I appreciate it all. I've decided that I will take the magazine job. Like I said before, I'll be heading up to NYC next weekend. Wish me luck on the apartment/roommate hunt.

How did it go?

UPDATE!

I want to start by saying THANK YOU to everyone who has been sending me messages of encouragement.

I'm extremely happy with my decision to move to New York and take the magazine job. It's been an amazing so far and I look forward to going to work every day. :D I've settle into a great apartment in Brooklyn with an old friend from college and it has been a blast.

So, thank you again to everyone who said that I should follow my dreams.

Congratulations and thank you for the update! :rose: It's so refreshing to see someone following her dreams and having a time of her life. And who knows? You may be encouraging someone else to take that leap of faith.

Congratulations once again and enjoy :rose:

I second this! Having the courage of ones convictions can lead wondrous places!

I faced a similar choice back in the 90s. I took the magazine job, and although the transition was tough, it was the best choice I ever made. How often do we get the chance to take a dream job? Grab the brass ring.
