The song is actually entitled Space Oddity, not Major Tom. Obviously a certain Major Tom is referenced in that song as well as in Ashes to Ashes. Bowie did point out in an interview that Major Tom is slang for heroin.

Of course, one cannot believe Bowie in interviews as he has a history of playing with the minds of anyone silly enough to cross verbal swords with him.

And thank goodness I will probably never see or hear the commercial.
