In the West, there are two traditions of magic: The high, or ceremonial, magic, and folk magic.

The high magic is the magic of educated people -- it involves elaborate theories, connected to the theories of alchemy and astrology, and altars and swords and magic circles drawn on the ground, and invocations in dead languages. This is the magic of Aleister Crowley, not of Harry Potter.

Folk magic involves no clearly articulated theory, only the gut-sense of a voodoo doll, and spells in vernacular language, and no equipment that would not be available to a medieval serf.

In medieval England, there was a recognized class of "cunning folk" -- legitimate folk magicians who used their magic beneficially, or at least harmlessly, and who among other things hired out as witchfinders.

Of course, neither kind of magic actually works, except as neural programming.

It was also a book and movie. I didn't care for the book but the movie was effective. Hopkins great as always.

It's a card game, too but I never played those.

Magicians are fun to watch.

Magic is one of those things I have trouble simply dismissing. I don't believe in it all that much but I can't ever get myself to say that it's not real either. Like ghosts. I don't buy it, don't think anything ever presented as evidence is real and yet...

Not really sure why you posted this. But you are leaving out Law of Attraction. That in and of itself is real magic and it really works!

What reason have you to believe it really works?!

You want me to give examples from my own life? I can do that.

When we bought this house, I told my then husband that it would be my last move. He promised me that he was going to retire from the military. But then he decided to sign up for another three years without telling me first. So my daughter and I told him, "We're staying right here!" when he got transferred to CA. BTDT and it didn't work for us.

When he protested, I told him he could be a geographic bachelor. When people asked me what my daughter and I were going to do and how we could afford to run two households, I told them that it would work out. It did.

He was a geographic bachelor. Found a place with cheap rent, and a woman to do his cooking, laundry, etc. At this point our marriage was long over. But he made it impossible for me to leave the marriage.

Not long after, the military school he worked for offered him free lodging and food. Even better!

Things didn't go well for him after he was forced to retire at 30 years. Once again, he had to move to another state for employment and once again, this was fine by my daughter and me because he was nothing but a thorn in our side.

Once again, he found cheap rent and this time many women to take care of him. He was close enough to his home state that he went there on weekends. His Italian relatives sent him back home with food for the week.

He did eventually get a job back here but I stood my ground on every front, never giving in to him. I actually told him 20 years ago that if he wasn't going to treat me well, I would no longer spend time with him and would only spend time with people who would.

Our divorce was final in March. The divorce was filed by him which in this state was to my advantage. As in, I got the house. I also got someone else living here. He's not a romantic partner. But a good friend and someone who does treat me well and helps me. I help him as well. We are good for each other.

My life is full of abundance. No, things don't come to me instantly. No, my lie isn't perfect. We all hit bumps in the road from time to time but I figure those are there for a reason. Sometimes they force us to take stock and move in a different direction than we were headed.

And by standing my ground and not leaving, our daughter was able to excel in school and dance. She's 20 now and has a good, professional job. Neither of us have any complaints.

My ex though... Being the cranky, whiny, pessimist that he can and is being, is not doing so well. He doesn't believe in the law of attraction. Neither do some other people I know. They constantly whine and complain about how bad their lives are.

Meanwhile, I am happy and grateful for what I have. I reap what I sow and it's working very well for me! :)

Very nice Jada59, glad you found it.
Is it Magic or Karma?
Magic is normally something done by others to or around us where Karma is the individual following the natural feeling inside.

I like to think of it as the natural magic of the universe. Do as you should and you will attract good. But I guess you could also call it karma.

What kind of magic is the modern egregore pepe the frog?

And then of course there's institutional magic. But it's rarely called magic.

Is Lord of the Rings Prejudice Against Orcs?

“It’s hard to miss the repeated notion in Tolkien that some races are just worse than others, or that some peoples are just worse than others,” Duncan says. “And this seems to me—in the long term, if you embrace this too much—it has dire consequences for yourself and for society.”

Magical literature is a white man's racist construct! BURN IT!!!!

If the law of attraction works, why do bad things happen to good and/or optimistic people?

I question where you put some of that stuff in your categories but I LOVE THE SHIT OUT OF MAGIC SYSTEMS!

Gimme that good D&D shit, gimme elemental alignments, gimme dark/light alignments, give me '2 steps ahead of science' I don't give a fuck, just gimme the good worldbuilding! I eat that shit UP.
