Maeve Binchy has died

I learned so much about writing women characters from reading her books. This hurts.

Sorry to hear this, and thanks for apprising us. I reluctantly have read several of her books. My wife reads them and then leaves them on my nightstand, where I eventually pick them up from guilt of ignoring them. (Last one I read was Tara Road). I enjoy having read them after I'm done. They are pretty hefty, so I have had a hard time convincing myself to start them. They are well written, though.

I'm still a bit leery about reading romances, and didn't read them at all until recently, so I never did read hers (or anyone else's). I keep think I should and will. And yes, the length of the ones I've seen makes me resist a bit, but I'll give one a try.

Most of them are fairly quick reads ("Light a Penny Candle" was an exception; that one took me a long time to slog through), and strictly speaking they're not romances in the commonly accepted sense of the term. The characters grow and learn from their mistakes, and sometimes the guy and the gal end up together and sometimes they don't.
