Warning...rant...
It all started out so innocently. I went to my car dealer to get my oil change. Since it was 8am, I just went into the waiting room and sat down to work on lesson plans. Some guy came in and tried to find something on tv...unfortunately what he settled on as good for the whole room was MSNBC, which as y'all know is a very right wing news station.
I'm trying to ignore what they're saying, making comment in my head or occasionally under my breath (for example, they said "the president is returning from a month long vacation. Is that too long a time" and then concluded that it wasn't. I muttered something under my breath about how nice it was that he gets a month but not loud enough for anyone else to hear)
Finally they get onto the topic of the Madonna/Britney kiss at the start of the MTV VMA's a couple nights ago. They then segue into this conversation the anchorwoman had had with someone about how it sent inappropriate messages, and encouraged lesbiansism. Someone in the room made some comment about how gays were everywhere. I muttered (yeah even three seats down from you in this room).
Then they said that Madonna was just trying to revive her career.
I finally laughed out loud. they all look at me. I said "she has entire college classes based on her influence on pop culture for the past 20 years, and every girl in pop music owes their career to her example. She doesn't need to do anything." Someone asked me to expound (they didn't use that word) on what I'd just said and I steered it back to gays after commenting on certain things.
I said that the Britney/Madonna kiss was a publicity stunt (as evidenced by the camera they had ready for the Justin Timberlake reaction shot) and that the media outlets were giving them the publicity that they were craving. Madonna has always challenged traditional sexual stereotypes, and every woman who grew up on her music (like I did) owes her healthy sense of sexuality (if they have one) largely to Madonna.
I also went on to talk about the power of the gay dollar. A recent quote said that gays have over 150 billion a year to spend, and that b/c they are usually childless and on the forefront of trends, they are perhaps the most attractive target for retailing anything from a singer to a clothing label.
Someone said that they (gays) seem to be everywhere...My comment was 10% of the pop is African American, 10% is Gay...how many people does that compute to? Of course we're everywhere...we're not scared anymore. (mostly)
I had to end my lecture when my car was done...
Anyways...yeah....
end rant
What did you think of the kiss? and What do you think of the media attention to it?
