I have the 'all clear' to resume my life.
Very short synopsis: I was bitten by a bug - probably last May (2005). The bug carried Borellia bacteria which took up residence in my nervous system. Due to other complications the borellia was not diagnosed until March this year. The prolonged time lapse allowed it to find 'habitats' inside me where it thrived.
In the early summer after some problems with my legs I began to experience 'insects' (for want of a better description) inside my head and neck. I became slightly paranoid (Had my head shaved, scratched my neck until it bled) then had trouble forming/saying words and strange swellings appeared around my jaw and chin.
The doctor decided to try large doses of antibiotics (conventional treatment for late stage Lyme Disease) - I was warned of the risk - 10% severe reaction with 3% fatality. Within a few hours of the first injection, the insects reacted by shutting down my nervous system - they release a powerful toxin as the antibiotic kills them. I found myself unable to breathe and with impared eyesight.
All is now stable - I'm going to be a guest patient at University College Hospital Department of Tropical Diseases why they try to find a way of dealing with the 'insects'.
It is possible I will be admitted to hospital for several weeks while they administer antibiotics under medical supervision. For the moment, I am on a course of Ledem a homeopathic remedy initially aimed at resolving the problem with my legs - they cramp solid after 3-4 hours of walking around. I've been on the treatment for a couple of weeks. My Homeopath will try to deal with the neurological problems next.
It has been an education - voices in my head, glimpses of 'hatched insects' flying away from me - I've lived my John Hurt moment (Alien), and survived. I can only hope a solution is found before the bastards attack again.
Thanks a million for all the wonderful messages of support
and 'backslaps' for the chaps.
