I bought one just before Apple discontinued them a couple years ago. I plan to upgrade in the next year but it's disconcerting that I'll be losing that screen real estate.

If you can, make sure you max out the memory and replace the hard drive with an SSD. I have one of the 17" MBPs that's a secondary machine at my desk. Upgrading the hard drive to an SSD really gave it new life.

I'm not really all that sure what size mine is, but is getting old now and I still love it.

Yup.

SSDs are the bee's knees. Had one put in my iMac after my old drive was clunking out and it is super smooth, whisper silent.

Those 17" Macbooks were pretty sweet, though. A few times I'd see someone rocking them out in public and they were like portable widescreen movie theaters.

Does this mean anything?

I have a 15" MacBook Pro from 2008 to which I've added an SSD, more memory and replaced the battery a few times. It's still running like a champ.

My colleague had the 17" version and while the screen real estate is nice, the form factor was just too unwieldy for me. I much prefer the 15" over the 17".

I'm due for a new one. I just can't yet bear to lose this one. And it runs the El Capitan beta quite nicely.
