Who's got one? From where? Has it helped in your creative endeavors? Has it hurt? Tell me everything you know.

I wouldn't know. Some people around here, and I'm not mentioning any names, like to conduct writing contests and then take off for a while and forget all about them when they get back wasting a lot of people's writing.

Ask daughter, she's MFA.

I'll do that. I can't believe she's the only one though.

Regarding the contest, I was hoping that everyone would forget about it long enough to resurrect the contest in a full thread.

I know some posted theirs. Did you not post yours?

No, I didn't. I promised it to your contest so I held it for you.

I'll end up with an MFA eventually, but right now I'm ranking an amateur.

I was accepted into an MFA program in WA but then had to decide: return to the San Francisco Bay area where everything makes sense -or- stay in eastern WA with the survivalist nuts/white-robe crowd to pursue the MFA?

Making sense won.

I'll get the MFA, someday.

I applied to 3 MFA programs about 6 years ago and go three rejection slips. In retrospect it was silly--I hadn't been published anywhere yet, had no really good clips to give them, and really had nothing to show them that I'd be a good candidate.

I also wasn't sure how marketable an MFA would make me. I already had an B.A. in writing, what more could an MFA teach me? Other than forcing me to actually write? Teaching positions can be hard to come by, and I didn't want to come out of grad school in the same boat I was in already.

So I scrapped my dreams and went back and got my MBA instead. And ended up in the same boat I was in already. Smooth move.

Shameless plug time-- I reworked the story I did for the contest, beefed it up, and posted it. It's called "A Man of Appetite", and I hope you'll check it out. Here's the link:

Christo,

I'm thinking of going back to school for something that I'll enjoy doing. Writing and fucking are my only two big passions and well I'm already a (sales) whore of sorts.

Thanks for the insight. One question, do you think having published work is vital to a successful submission?

Marxist, i didn't have any published work and i was accepted. Perhaps it's of importance at big schools, but it wasn't at the University of Washington.

Muff, you're on some kinda av gorge of late.
Yes! Much better.
:p

Go to school and take a whole bunch of classes until you get something that fires your blood beyond Professor RubyFruit-Look-Alike.

Or just go and get it.

Even if you never use it education is never wasted.

All those bytes we stick in our brains makes a new wrinkle. Mine's so wrinkled that my O/S can't handle the processor and keeps crashing. At least I don't lose everything in the ol' hard drive, if you know what I mean.

Could you take classes while whoring yourself out to drugs?
