Lyrics Reminder

Boulevard of Broken Dreams by Green Day (Album: American Idiot)

It's not surprising that this song has won a Grammy and stayed on the peak of Billboards for an astounding 16 weeks.

"I walk a lonely road
The only one that I have ever known
Don't know where it goes
But it's home to me and I walk alone

I love this song to death. Suits my personality to the very core.

This song inspires me during my downer days in college. Never fails to provide me a much needed kick in my life.

One More Night by Maroon 5 (Album: Overexposed)

This song is a red siren that screams sex with its lyrics.

"...Try to tell you "no" but my body keeps on telling you "yes".

Try to tell you "stop", but your lipstick got me so out of breath.

I'll be waking up in the morning, probably hating myself.

And I'll be waking up, feeling satisfied but guilty as hell."

Really, really fitting for a sex scene between two ole flames, meeting each other after a long time.

From John Prine - In Spite Of Ourselves

In spite of ourselves, we'll end up a'sittin' on a rainbow
Against all odds, honey, we're the big door prize
We're gonna spite our noses, right off of our faces
There won't be nothin', but big old hearts, dancin' in our eyes

She thinks all my jokes are corny
Convict movies make her horny
She likes ketchup on her scrambled eggs
Swears like a sailor when shaves her legs
She takes a lickin' and keeps on tickin'
I'm never gonna let her go

He's got more balls than a big brass monkey
He's a wacked out weirdo and a love bug junkie
Sly as a fox and crazy as a loon
Payday comes and he's howlin' at the moon
He's my baby I don't mean maybe
Never gonna let him go

The chorus and two verses of a touching love song between a funny and imperfect couple.

Thank you for the nice addition, Aynmair!

This song reminds me of two old lovebirds who are sharing their last days together with each other. The wit, banter and the fondness in that stage is kinda reflected by this song.

Makes way for a nice mature romance story, I think.

There is a good one for LW.
Hows That by the Aussie band Sherbert

It goes:
You told me I was the one
The only one to get your head undone
and for a while I believed the lines that you spun
Now I've been looking at you
Looking closely at the things you do
I didn't see things the way you wanted me to.

The chorus
How, how, how, how's that
You messed about I caught you out How's that.
And now that I've found where it's at
it's goodbye, now how's that.

The terminology refers to the game of cricket where if a fielder catches the ball he yell's How's that ( usually shortened to HOWZAT)

Apologize by One Republic (Album: Dream Out Loud)

LW generally reminds me of this song by One Republic. Although various renditions and remixes of this song has been produced till date, I prefer to stick with the original one with a violin solo for beginning and the hollow beat playing in the background.

You tell me that you need me,
Then you go and cut me down...
But wait...
You tell me that you're sorry,
Didn't think I'd turn around
And say...

That it's too late to apologize.

I think that Ryan Tedder has the best voice amongst all the male singers in the music scene. Just love his voice...

I like this thread.

I used to throw song lyrics into all my stories. I was actually told to cut down by one of my professors. I might start again.

I used to have quotes taped up all over my room in college, from lyrics to literary quotes. On my bedpost I had:

"I've been waiting all night for someone like you
But you'll have to do." ~The Psychedelic Furs, "Run and Run"

Glad you liked it :D

Do post your favorite lyrics out here sometimes :rose:

I searched the website before posting this thread and got most of my materials from this site (Clickie!)

I'll quote a portion from that page:

I don't plan to actually use the song in my story, just take an idea from it.

Of course, this thread can be regarded as mostly to critique the songs.

If I use any song in my writings, I'll definitely obtain the necessary permissions.

I've used lines from a song and/or an entire song as inspiration for several stories. In my first years of writing, I made the mistake of adding lines to them as well.

About two or three months ago, I had a conversation with a lawyer on this very topic. I have a novel in the works based on a song. After discussing it with him, he said I was following the original idea far too closely, that I was using the songwriter's idea, which was his copyrighted song.

It was an interesting conversation for sure.

I've read that those people from the music industry are pretty vigilante about this issue. To make any amendments/changes to their songs, one has to obtain permission/buy the copyrights from the holder.

There is a website that lists all the things, whether they are under any copyright protection or not.

I cook up stories of my own, and try to fit songs/ hear songs that fit that theme. I don't want to use Jon Bon Jovi's Ugly to cook up a whole story on that lyrics. His laywers will sue my ass for sure.

I think countless stories, with countless overlapping themes have been created till date. Most of these stories' theme will definitely match the theme of one song or the other.

Unless explicitly stated in the story or otherwise, I don't think anyone should have a problem with the law.

Was I right in my axioms so far?

I just said it was an interesting conversation. ;)

I do question how posting lyrics on the forum is any less a violation of copyright than posting them within a story here on the site. But I'm not up on copyright law.

Now THAT is something I don't have an idea on. There are many websites that post the lyrics of songs without permission and all. They're there just for removing any confusion regarding the lyrics of the song, but a violition nonetheless.

Quoting "parts" of songs stays well within the limit of copyright protection. If any copyright holder sues my ass regarding this, I'll definitely ask...I don't know whom to ask as Laurel is AWOL, but deleting this thread would be an option I'll not hesitate to take.

Conversations with Lawyers are always interesting, with them trying to bulldoze the point into your head, even if they don't tell me about everything and all.

I think the guidelines given on the site might be inaccurate.

She's back.

He only bulldozes his point to show off. I have ways of bulldozing back, though.

I just posted one verse of a song. The post disappeared. Ratz.

Listen to this one.

Remarkably similar, eh ?

Listen to this one.

Remarkably similar, eh ?

It definitely is.

And here I was thinking how original that song was. Anyone can pick the similarities if they've heard the 2 songs.

I guess that most of Green Day fans have never heard a song from the 80s, so they can never tell if they've heard it before.

When, where..?

Yesterday. Here. A bit of 10cc's ICEBERG:

I was an orphan, and I couldn't help it
I've been in and out of trouble
Ever since they left me in
A basket on the freeway

plus another quatrain, and a comment about how the song seemed to have been written about me.

Hmm...posts vanishing into thin air.

I'm sure most of my posts in this thread would've vanished by now if yours broke some rules that I don't know of. Anyways, I'm downloading this song and hear what it's like.

Thanks for the addition :)

Not lyrics in a song, but a song as a story...

I don't have lyrics to be used in a story to share, but a while back I started working on a story that is based on an entire song. Some bits of the lyrics will show up in the story, but only where certain phrases from the song would truly belong in the writing. The story will be largely written without using the lyrics, but will convey the feeling I get when I listen to the song.

In my mind this is going to be a great story as I intend to capture the full emotion of the song in my writing. In reality, this seems to be a very steep hill to climb so the story is barely off the ground.

As for lyrics in general, with the melody removed... I like a fair amount of the strangeness in the lyrics from Beck, and the romance of the pre-1980's Moody Blues.

I did include the lyrics of a song in this story without really thinking of copyright, but the fact the lyrics are taken almost word for word from a poem written over 200 years ago (just with language updated to modern terms) makes me feel relatively confident that I don't have to worry.

LOL! I don't think the artist will hound you from his grave. :D
