Im considering buying some more luxurious sheets for my bed and was wondering what opinions people had regarding the various options.

I know alot of people enjoy eygptian cotton, but Im curious about satin, charmeuse satin and silk particularly habotai silk

If youve got or tried them, how are they, breathable or too hot and sticky would you get them again etc
thanks

I haven't tried satin personally but from what i have heard from other people they are the way to go. Silk has a tendency to hold heat so unless it's winter or cold in the room, the tend to get pretty hot and sticky.

When my wife and I first moved out to Idaho, we moved into a house that had been previously occupied by her brother and his then wife. The house was mostly furnished, although it was missing the most important item, our computers.

The bed was a captains bed, with the box spring and mattress it was pretty high off the ground. And it had freshly cleaned satin sheets on them, both cover and top sheet.

I thought to myself upon spotting the bed "Oh cool!" I'd never slept in a bed with satin sheets. Turns out I never did sleep in that bed with the satin sheets either. Both of us leaped onto the bed and slid right off it. It was like trying to sleep on inclined ice. No matter which way you lay, you'd slowly slid in the bed. Within 30 minutes of trying to go sleep, we were up and changing the bed sheets for cotton ones.

Satin sheets might make for an erotic encounter, but I found them less than desireable for just plain old sleeping.

I have had the same experience with satin sheets.. slip slidin away .. especially with a satin nighty on. Anything over 250 thread count is gonna be heaven.

I'd go with cotton sheets and a super-high threadcount. The higher the threadcount, the more it will feel like satin.

I would visit bed bath & beyond, or some similar store, so that you can touch the fabric samples for all the different types of sheets. I prefer softer sheets, but some people prefer crinkly. If that's the case, stick to a low thread count. "Sateen" is a type of finish (I think) that makes cotton sheets a little shiny and a lot soft. My 300 count are awesome!!! And I got 'em on sale. If you don't care about color, and don't mind white, you can get really good deals on high thread count sheets (like 600 - 1000tc). And it's worth it to check out overstock dot com to see what kind of deals they have going on.

I advise against satin sheets for the reasons listed above. And on a side note, I saw BB&B offering complete sets of Medicci sateen sheets for about $100. BUT, considering the softness, texture, and overall eye-apeal, I thought $100 was way worth it. Too bad they only make Queen, King, and Cal-King sizes (I have a full/standard).

Happy hunting.

thanks for the heads up on overstock.com, what a fantastic site! gonna grab 1200 thread count sateen sheet set for less then $400 !

I have silk sheets and comforter and I LOVE them . They are not slippery like satin. I find them cool in the summer and warm in the winter. But I also just ordered some Egyptian cotten sheets (sateen) from Overstock.com and they are very very nice. I think they were 350 count and $40 for queen. I never knew they went up to 1200! I'm gonna have to check that out......

be careful some of the high thread count sheets do nasty things like use a poor weight of 2 ply thread, or have polyester in the blend. I vote for going to a store and finding a set that feels good!

Have tried satin sheets and they're just not nearly as comfortable as cotton to sleep in. Not bad for some athletic sex ... but not nearly as comfortable to sleep in.

Have found satin feel good the first half hour or so, but can hold in the heat terribly after awhile....fine cotton/percale on the other hand is smooth, soft, and breathes so your body temperature remains comfortable.
