This was the 1st episode of the new BBC3 (british channel) Body Image series. It opened with a revealing episode about a young teenage transsexual named Lucy and the transformation she had gone through from being born a boy named Richard to the girl she is now.

This is no ordinary story: Lucy was born a male called Richard and wants nothing more than to undergo gender re-assignment.

She turned 18 in 2006 - a birthday more momentous than most when entering adulthood. Lucy was now legally old enough to begin the surgical process to change sex. Her first present, from herself and one she's saved years for, was breast enlargement surgery.


A big inspiration in Lucy's life is 2004 Big Brother winner, Nadia Almada. Through times of bullying and low self-esteem, Nadia's triumph in front of the British public gave Lucy hope and strength.

Lucy now lives her life as a female; she is a normal teenage girl who loves shopping, clothes and make-up. However, there is one part of her body that is a constant reminder that she was born Richard.

This thought-provoking programme follows Lucy as she fights to achieve her dream of becoming a woman.

I've never really understood the finer aspects of this subject matter but found this a really fascinating program to watch. She was a brave person for airing her life on national TV for everyone to watch. I would like to hear if anyone else had seen this program or their thoughts on this. The girls website is:
