New Rules:

"Get a room! McCain is so hot for his running mate, he had to put a folder in front of his crotch because the surge was working."

"Fred Thompson: you don't get to criticize the other party's nominee for 'making teleprompter speeches' in a speech you're reading off a teleprompter."

"It's not Obama's fault that he's a magna cum laude Harvard grad and you're resurfacing driveways for your brother-in-law."

I adore Bill Maher.

And sher, and lisa. :kiss::kiss::kiss:

He's on again in about 45 minutes - the new Friday edition.

We may have to stay up and watch.

:D

I have a love/hate relationship with Bill Maher. But he is fun to watch. He's either making laugh with some witty and truthful comment, or making my blood boil with some asinine remark. :D

Yep. I always look to comedians for my cogent political analyses.

The comedians are often more cogent than the pundits.

I like him too.

Bill Maher and Jon Stewart are very intelligent and well read.

(Not used to that with our current crop of politicians in charge.)

As my favorite writer puts it, "Comedy is the most uncontrolled use of language and therefore the one most hated by those with power." ;)

Comedy is the Fool. That's its role. Especially standup, where the production costs are so low. One man, doing standup, isn't even beholden to the crew around him, and can speak.

I would be bored with a comedian who just did Henny Youngman stuff, cracking jokes and one-liners. The best standup is indeed cogent and insightful.

Yes, and Maher is one of the best.

And who's more worthy of respect: a comedian who does political material, or a clown playing at politics?

Now, wait - don't tell me.

I know the answer . . .

Some of the best political comedy is the unscripted news footage that Jon Stewart shows on his program: if a politician contradicts himself, or gets his facts backwards, or just out-and-out lies and there's proof of the lie, sometimes the only way we find out it happened is by watching Jon Stewart. Time and again, his show has provided proof that the "liberal media" are passing up weekly opportunities to skewer Dubya.

An old friend from HS worked on Politically Incorrect for any number of years. Don't know if she's with him on his new show--possibly. I like Bill Maher's stand on a huge number of things.

We are not amused indefinitely

I have a daughter who has earned her living for some six years writing comedy material for television. She also does some stand up to make sure she stays tuned into her audience. She told me recently that the best stuff was the unscripted reality though sometimes the reality is so good it's less believable.

She also reckons that politicians have a sort of market shelf life after which they are no longer funny at all, apparently Dubya achieved his comedic useby date wayback.

She is also praying for a McCain win because he and Palin are God's gift to comedy wheras it's really difficult to make Barrack Obama funny.:)
