Today was the day!
Jason Cross couldn't help but smile at the thought. She'd finally be back today. His oldest friend, probably his best friend. They'd known each other for years, ever since his family had moved into the aging home next to hers. His family were new wizards, his parents the first in their families to have the talent and power of magic.
Many of the older and more traditional magic families looked on the "nouveau magi" but theirs had always been friendly. Having children the same age helped with that, he was sure, as it gave both of them somewhere they knew their child could be to play and be safe.
Even when he was younger, before he really understood his feelings, Jason had admired and adored his friend. She was amazing. A cute child who'd turned into a pretty girl and become a beautiful teen. And she was smart. She was clever, she was charismatic and commanding.
He felt he was her intellectual equal and he studied hard as well. Jason loved magic, everything about it. Even when he was young enough where he wasn't supposed to mess with it, he'd read his parents' books. He'd even played at doing "magical rituals" with her as a kid, not that they were real or ever did anything.
Well. There was that one time when he'd actually used some of his parents magical foci and reagents as well as the book; none of them really went together but he hadn't understood that at the time. He'd just been a child. There had a been a great deal of light and he'd felt the magic flowing from the ritual and going...somewhere. But no, nothing had ever happened.
Today she was back, her family having done on vacation as they often did over the summer. They'd be going to their last year at the Addams Academy of Thaumeturgy. He'd turned 18 a few weeks ago and he had gotten a present for her, something to celebrate their friendship.
If he was honest, he had feelings for her that were more than friendly...but he tried not to think about it. She was way out of his league. And while it might be all right for them to be friends, a great many in the magical community wouldn't approve of any other kind of relationship between them. And well, he'd never gotten any hint that she was interested in him, so...
Jason walked down the steps from his house, a wave of his hand opening the gate and then closing it behind him. He was about 5'10" in height and had an agile built that wasn't quite slender but was hardly broad or brawny. His skin was a healthy peach color and his large eyes were intelligent, curious, and warm. His hair was a tumbled mess of sandy blond locks and he wore a simple bomber style jacket over his school uniform. A backpack filled with books and other items for school was slung across his back.
His right hand lingered in his pocket, fingering the box that held her gift. Would she like it? He hoped so. He loved to see her smile and happy, even when she bossed him around, always the more assertive of the two of them. Jason walked the fifty or so yards to the front of her house, waiting for her to appear so they could head off together.
