Love and hockey

First image; camera focused on background as there is no one in mid-ground. The near (foreground) officer is extremely blurred by depth of focus.

Second image, focused on mid-ground (the two people on the ground); Now background is slightly blurred and near officer is slightly less blurred.

The differing effects of focus are all due to focal point and depth of field.

I don't need a lesson on Depth of Field as I have used the effect many times. And that's when you had to manually select the f stop to produce the DoF you wanted.

Cannon A1 - multiple lenses. My favorite was the 28mm - 310mm zoom f8 through out.

Still have the camera in a bag with all the accessories around here somewhere. Should drag it out, buy some 400 Chrome and take some shots around town.

Zeb, if you understand depth of focus, why do you have a problem with the difference in clarity of the background between the two images? The photographer used a Nikon D3 with a 70-200mm lens. The shutter was wide open at f/2.8.

With the first image, the background looks about 25 meters away. The lens was likely set at about 180 mm to give that magnification. So the depth of field would be about 2.75 meters.

With the second image, if the two subjects were about 10 meters away and the lens focal length was also at 180 mm (magnification appears to be the same), the total depth of field would only be about half a meter. Anything closer than about 9.75 meters or farther than 10.25 meters would have to be out of focus. At about 25 meters away, the line of officers couldn't be in focus.

In any event, I believe the two people involved made a public statement confirming the event and that the photograph was neither staged nor doctored. The couple were trying to flee and the lady was knocked down by the riot squad. Her companion was comforting her (he knew the right way to comfort her).

Thanks to Zeb for making way more of this than was necessary and taking the "coolness" factor out of the picture.

Killjoy.

I bet you tell little kids that there's no Santa Claus either.
