LOUISVILLE — A federal jury began deliberations Monday to determine whether a former Louisville police detective violated Breonna Taylor’s civil rights and used excessive force in a March 2020 apartment raid in which she was fatally shot by other officers.
The two-week federal trial wrapped up Monday afternoon, with both sides finishing their closing arguments and Judge Rebecca Grady Jennings reading instructions to jury members so they could begin deliberations. The case marked the first federal trial against any of the officers involved in the shooting of Taylor.

Jennings reported “elevated voices” that came from the jury room during deliberations and that court security visited the room, the AP reported, noting the jurors eventually became deadlocked on Hankison’s counts.
