Lost in US politics again

Someone just told me that George W. Bush is a Republican. If that is true can someone explain the conundrum this raises about the invasion of Iraq.

Iraq was, and still is a Republic. Bush is a Republican.
He says he wants to bring Democracy to Iraq, but surely only Democrats would want to do that?

The difference between the US parties is that republican scandals always involve money, and democratic scandals always involve sex.
