Fuck, has anyone ever lost a story you've written? I just did and it has to be the most unbelievably frustrating thing that could ever happen.

Geez, it's bad enough having to edit. But, to try to recreate a story. ARgggghhhhh!!!!!

I do what I can to avoid any slip ups.

A the worst, I once wiped out about 10kb's of writing by saving a blank line over it.

Regular CR-RW burns help a lot.

Online backups do as well.

I have an ASSTR page, and I've found an upload with no extention doesn't show on the what's new list, so you can -hide- inwork projects there in hidden directories.

Darn it...

Another post without logging in...

Need to undo the read-only on my cookies file and directory long enough to get this place in there. :)

i feel exactly the same dear. i spent three quarters of an hour typing a PM to a friend a little while back.

cleverclogs me, i always control c what i type cos i know darn well i'll disconnect before it gets sent.

can you guess what i did?

i control 'v' instead. lost the lot.

the room warmed up pretty quick.

Unf, that's horrible! If that ever happens again, try a control-z for "undo." It may bring your work back.

*making HUGE yellow sticky - CONTROL Z FOR UNDO WORK DISAPPEARANCE*

thank you dear, i'll remember that one :)

Backup, Backup, Backup!

I have two hard drives on my PC and I use the Windows "Scheduled Tasks" facility to do a backup of my data files (i.e. my Literotica stories, mostly) on a daily basis. It runs in the background, takes only seconds to run (I copy only changed files after the first run) and once set up it can be forgotten.

Believe me, it saves some heartache!

Been there! I cried!

I had a little Workpad z50 that I bought for the express purpose of writing my stories on. It was a really tiny laptop type thing but it only had RAM and no hard drive or anything. Did have a modem. You could save whatever you did onto the RAM and it would keep a certain amount (can't rememeber how much RAM it had, but for the text files I was creating, I wasn't overloading the thing.)

Well, this piece of shit crashed on me so many times and I've lost countless bits of stories. Usually only when it was ever unplugged. I sent it back to IBM to have it fixed REPEATEDLY.

It got to the point that I was afraid to use it. Well, the last time I sent it to IBM to get it fixed, it worked reasonably well for quite some time, however I didn't really use it for anything important like my stories because I was so afraid to lose another story.

Well, one night I was really in the mood to work on a story I'd been writing for quite some time. I had the Workpad plugged in, and it had never crashed before while it was plugged in, so I assumed I was good to go.

I wrote almost the WHOLE story that night. You know how those occasions hit where the words just flow and you swear you are writing the Pulitzer of Porn? It was one of those nights. I finished the story, save it, and it was still plugged in and everything, and I knew I was going to head to the computer to upload it onto the desktop right away because I was too afraid of losing it.

Well, I hit the power button, just to make sure it was still going to work, that I could turn it off and on. That's all it took. The power went off. Wouldn't come back on. The machine was still plugged in. I had the whole friggen story on that piece of shit and it wouldn't turn back on. I tried everything!

I was crushed! Absolutely devastated that I lost yet another story off that piece of shit that I should have known not to use the thing. I'd lost so many things off it before.

I don't know how I resisted the urge not to smach it on the floor. I still cry thinking about that lost story.

Believe it or not, that story is still unfinished. I love the story, but I'm still so full of anger at having lost what was done, and good. <sigh>

A few weeks ago I got a virus that wiped out my HDD. Luckily I had most of the stuf on CDr and most of the rest I managed to copy onto a second drive. However, over the years I've lost several stories, some of the best I've written, but I would say that. Now I upload a story just as soon as it's finished and hope I don't loose too much in the event of a disaster.
