They had shared something wonderful. Zoey wasn't not one to let her heart feel much but this one time, she let herself feel... and what did it cost her?

Hurt.

As much as she tried not to replay that night, she couldn't help it.

Mark had said he needed to talk to her. It was late at night and she had just finished a 15 hour shift at the hospital where she was an ER nurse. Helping with patching up gunshot wounds and getting hit on by over confident residents was a common occurrence for her and right now, she was just wanting to get home and take a hot shower and then sleep.

But no, Mark had insisted they talk. He respected Zoey's need for rest after a long shift so this had to be important. He also had gotten back into town from a week long trip. He often left town on short notice and came back within a week or two. She never really delved into his world, all she knew was that he was a salesman for some aeronautic company and well, she trusted him with what he told her.

Except tonight. They had met at her place and he seemed on edge.

That’s when he told her.

“I work for a secret government entity and I need to leave town…so I came to say goodbye.”

OK, so it wasn’t that simple but he did have a hard time explaining it and maybe it was because she was tired, but Zoey didn’t believe him. She had accused him of dumping her and used this fabricated story to do so. It sounded like something from the movie True Lies. Only this was really happening. It ended with Nicole asking him to leave.

And that was the last time she had seen him. That was over six months ago.

She threw herself into her work. What else was there to do? She wasn’t one to cry over heartache. Hell no.

Maybe she threw herself into her work a little too much because she hadn’t noticed she was being followed for the past few weeks. She never noticed the car parked a few doors down. She didn’t even realize one of the new residents seem to take a special interest in her…

It wasn't easy to do. He didn't like hiding what he did from Zoey, but he didn't believe that she would believe him if he told her. It turned out he was right. When Mark finally told Zoey what he did, she asked him to leave... and it wasn't really an ask.. she told him to leave.

He couldn't give Zoey all of the details. There was no way to tell her the full extent of his job. If he did, it might put her in danger. When she would not accept the limited description, all Mark could do was leave.

It was true that Mark worked for a secret government entity. There was no record of it anywhere. If you looked up Mark's name in the government register it showed him as an accountant with the Department of Education. Education couldn't be further from what he did.

What Mark did, when he was away, was in foreign countries and involved finding ways to eliminate targets that were seen as detrimental to the Untied States. He usually had to go into the field when someone else had failed at the mission. Mark never failed.

There was a problem though. It had become necessary for him to go into the field more than they had planned recently. This time it was going to be a long mission which is why he had tried to tell Zoey. This wasn't a typical go in, execute a plan, get out mission. On this mission, he had to go in and actually take time to develop the plan. He had to be in country long enough to track the target, become accustomed to his routines, and figure out how the target would be eliminated.

Adding to the problems was that mark's handler let him know that she believed Mark's identity had been compromised. Mark needed to lay low and be careful when he went to do recon. Mark could handle himself. He just needed time. Little did he know, that if they couldn't find him, they would look for someone close to him.
