Apologies if OT, but I want to mention this somewhere.

I wrote a story a while ago, collaborating with a friend, and after submission, it was rejected becasue of "spelling and grammar".

No, I didn't agree.

It's an implied part of my RL occupation that spelling and grammar are 100% accurate, as well as a need to exprerss myself clearly.

I emailed the finished product to my friend who did nothing more thatn change British-English terminology and spelling to American-English: sure enough, spelling and grammar was now acceptable.

For goodness sake - is it really a spelling mistake to write "colour" (for example)? This is a world-wide site, and we all understand each others differences in the use of words; I don't get agitated when I read "color", for example - I just accept that other people spell different words in different ways, and personally, I don't think that that's a good enough reason to reject a story.

I was planning to become a volunteer editor, but wonder if I need bother now

I'M gonna answer you. Sorry, but if your story was rejected I can assure you it WASN'T because of your British-English spelling. I have load of British-English people in my roster and their story has never been rejected because of their spelling.

You have to understand, too, that Lit's reviewers (those who look at stories before they are accepted) are only humans and as such are allowed to make mistakes.....so, it's completely possible that you were unlucky enough to get one reviewer who didn't like your British-English spelling and rejected it because of it. It doesn't mean it would happen every time you submit a story, though.

Now, please, if your spelling and language is as good as you say, it would be a shame if you deprived budding writers of your help just because you're mad at Lit's treatment of your story.

I hope you'll reconsider your decision.
