Posted this in the beta reader thread but it’s so quiet I thought I’d try again with my own thread.
I’m looking for beta readers for my work. I’ve got some stories already published so you can take a look at them if you want to see what my style is like (link to my submissions is in my signature). I’ve written in several categories, but I’d say all my stories qualify as romance. If I had to summarize I’d say it about emotional connection and acceptance for me. I’m not at all fussy about details like age or gender, it’s all the same to me who’s loving who as long as it’s love. (Except for incest. That I don’t plan on writing.)
English is not my first language and it affects my writing and my goals in writing. I’m not looking for anyone to endlessly polish whatever mistakes I make. My goal is met if the text is understandable enough to tell my story. I will get better as I go, but I’m not putting overly much effort in it. I can occasionally use a wrong word for something or make some stupid spelling mistake or something similar, and it would be cool to have someone point it out. I can read my text well enough but I do get blind to my own writing.
What I also don’t have any grasp on is what words or phrases are used in UK versus US etc. That’s why I’d like someone to read a story of mine, it’s situated in the UK and I’d like someone to check if there’s something so un-British it would ruin the reading experience. It’s 11K words of mushy boy-meets-girl-romance.
Another story I’m looking for a reader on is a gay male romance of approximately 15K words. It’s about a truck driver in the US, so in addition to making a sanity check on my writing in general and words in relation to area I’d be interested if someone actually knew something about long route truckers. I’m lazy as hell when it comes to research, and my MO is to be vague enough to hopefully not do any really awful mistakes. I’m satisfied if it’s plausible enough, but if something is really blatantly off I’d like to correct it.
I’m also willing to return the favor and read something of yours if you’d like. Obviously I can’t edit language I don’t know myself, and I tend to get so immersed in the story I probably can’t offer very objective observations, but I suppose I would be able to point the more obvious mistakes like wrong verb tenses or changing the name of the characters halfway through and such. I’ve never beta read for anyone but I’d be willing to try. As categories go I will read anything, but I think the most not-my-thing categories are BDSM, non con and incest, so I probably won’t be able to offer any input in the actual subject matter.
If I don’t find anyone interested I’ll post my stories on my own, but if my stories interests you send me a PM anytime and I might have something else to beta read.
